Hmmm... I must've lucked out.
My 2013 never had any crickets. My only minor peeve was the rear package shelf creak, but even that wasn't enough of an issue for me to do anything about it.

I was starting to get the clutch squeak, but I didn't really see that as a big problem (would've fixed it if I wasn't returning the lease).

I think you just have to accept that these annoyances (they won't leave you stranded or in danger) are the price of admission for a fun, inexpensive car.

What I generally do in manual shifting:

Upshift before the engine starts screaming if I don't want to accelerate more.
Downshift before I accelerate when the engine is not already revving.
Downshift to start revving before the curve if I want to exit accelerating. Downshift before uphill if I want to maintain or increase my speed.
Downshift sequentially while coming to a stop.

As the driving gets more aggressive, upshifts are done later and downshifts are done earlier at higher rpms. Or, upshifts are earlier and downshifts are later at lower rpms in casual driving. I just listen the engine instead of counting the gears.

There are a lot of things that can make long-term ownership of these cars stressful, maintenance cost being one of them.

Thankfully this car is a joy to get out and drive in, and it works well once you get stuff sorted out.

100,000 miles and not one issue. Maintenance costs are lower than many cars and are going to exist no matter what you buy. If left stock or properly modded it should not cost much to maintain at all.

I agree with @Tcoat and I did the spark plugs earlier this month, I spent ~$500 on the 60k service which included the spark plugs, a pair of coil packs and transmission/differential fluid.

Yeah, it will cost more than a Camry/Civic/Fusion/Malibu you don't give a shit about and just change oil on once a year and buy tires every 4-5 years, especially if you drive it hard and burn up tires and brakes and fluids and such, but it's a helluva lot less than pretty much any non "American" or "Japanese" economy car while being a lot more fun.

That hasn't been my experience. My 2013 is over 4 years old and has 20,000 short trip miles on it ....... no problems what so ever.
