I could use a good Humfrz back in he say story now. Had a really bad day. I may be forced to retire a couple years early. That would really change my plan. Here in Silicon Valley, ageism is really a thing. I'm 54 this year, no one hires 54 year old in this valley. Sucks.

Unless you are a CFO, CEO, or other executive. I'm just a senior grunt.

I'm sorry.

I think it's a reality especially with our generation but that may just be my cynical side. Either way, I think about it sometimes.

Best wishes. I hope it works out well for you.

I'm sorry to hear about your day and your situation. No sarcasm, no wise guy comments... just truly sorry. That was a sad post to read. If it makes you feel better (and it won't), you're not alone. A lot of the gigs in the area that have been mine for almost two decades are now being played by younger less experienced players for reasons I don't understand (it's certainly not an improvement in the quality of services provided), other than that perhaps newer younger directors seem to enjoy having younger people around them rather than seasoned pros who may be a bit more aware of... well.... doesn't matter. Who knows. I've been fortunate to work with a lot of great people over the years, and I'm grateful for the opportunities. Hopefully, you can look back on your career, see the good you've done, the people you've helped and encouraged, and look forward to whatever the future holds knowing that you've been there for other people throughout your life.

All my best.

Barry

My paranoia got the best of me. Am selling my OnePlus 3T so I can get an LG G6. There's something to be said about a waterproof phone when you're up to your nuts in swamp water.

There's also something to be said about wading around in swamps.

Yep, several of us have gone or will go through that "transition".

It's definitely a challenging time in ones career path.

So, if the company/industry deems you "too old", sometimes that means that they can hire a new person to do the same job for less money. Which really doesn't reflect on your capabilities.

An avenue you may consider is in the field of consulting. Another one is working by contract. They are shorter term opportunities, but they can be financially and personally rewarding.

Another opportunity is in a different field altogether. Like selling real estate or insurance.

If you have a source of capital, you may enjoy starting (or buying into) a small business.

I went from an Army Officer (2 years) to a research agronomist (20 years) to a consultant (4 years) for upstart bio-tech companies, to an environmental consultant (8 years) to a real estate broker (11 years).

Now, I'm a full time retired grandpa (5 years).

Don't get discouraged and keep your spirits up ...... doors will open up ..... but you gotta look for them.

What about outside of Silicon Valley? I assume you're in IT?

Also, my tablet corrected that to Silicone Valley. Totally different place.

From there you can get on 14 north and cross over to 395 above Edwards AFB. That'll be more enjoyable than getting off at the end of 2 and just sitting on 395 for hours.
I think I might just do this instead! Thanks again!
