Do I need it?
Dealers asked if I wanted an undercoating for the car before I pick it up. I said sure. They said its good to prevent rust and corrosion. Do we really need it?

Sounds like a steal. where do you live? Is high humidity, snow, and excessive rain an issue?

I'm definitely getting undercoating done. I didn't get it from the dealer though. Wanted to research it on Autopia first. I should probably do that soon. :P

Is it really necessary? I was under the impression that modern cars were pretty well protected straight out of the factory.

Did it on my last new vehicle... was a total waste. There are so many areas that are "do not undercoat" for maintenance purposes, its almost totally useless. It is only a cash grab at the dealer that they push usually because they are allowed to roll into your financing. Pretty well purely profit for them. Avoid.

Done right it can be beneficial on a car driven year round in snow country where they use a lot of salt on the roads. Unfortunately it is often not done right, and if done improperly can do more harm than good. I always decline all paint protection/interior protection/undercoating sales pitches when buying a car.

I would like to know how they do it before going ahead with the process. If it's just sprayed on willy-nilly it could look lousy underneath. My MR2 was undercoated and there were big gobs of rubberized crap covering everything. The car has plastic panels under the car and it comes undercoated from the factory. If they take the plastic panels off, mask off things that don't need to get sprayed and take their time, it might be worth it to do it. Otherwise I wouldn't bother; go to the car wash and get the underside cleaned often enough to keep the salt off it.
