If you want a boosted twin, I would suggest buying a lightly used (20-50k miles) stock car, and using the savings to get the exact mods you want. That's what Im doing, only I bought it new, and am boosting it sooner or later. I have enjoyed a portion of the warranty period and am comfortable its not a lemon, plus I know the car hasn't been abused, because I am the only person to have driven it (aside from test drives at thr dealer)
As everyone has already said, you have no clue how hard that car has been driven, or if the work was done by professional mechanics or teenagers... Plus, you will probably find it much more satisfying to enjoy a car you designed and modified yourself (even if you have someone else do the work). Early 2000's are around 16K or so which is about what a decent used 86 goes for. The 'Vette is about 500 lbs heavier and just a bigger car overall. Personally, it was a great car but just didn't have that light, nimble feel. I think you're either a 'Vette guy or not a 'Vette guy. It all comes down to personal preference. I was always a 911 guy but now enjoying the 86 for many reasons.

And we get raped on all luxury /prestige/expensive cars, so even a late 2000's Porsche Cayman still costs almost 50k AUD. |

Would it be cheaper to import one? Buy it and send it to a shop for the supercharger before sending it to Australia? I have no clue if you would be paying taxes on it twice or anything so this might sound idiotic. Just throwing out ideas

Ha damn a C6 for mid 20's. That's about a third of what people charge for them in Australia, although they have to be imported privately and converted to RHD.

I am thinking I am a lot happier with this particular vehicle, the price is significantly lower giving me a large budget for potential repairs/improvements.

Apparently next year or so this will be changing to allow parallel grey imports but for now it's not really an option. That being said, a lot of our new cars aren't actually too badly priced. New 86 in California is MSRP USD$26,255 or AUD$35,900 roughly. 86 in QLD new is AUD$33,090 rrp. The luxury car tax is a joke though. |
