Then again I don't know your financial background, plus the fact that someone has offered to pay fully for it. To me, first cars are meant to be dinged, scratched, and loathed.....plus at your age, you should take that money and SAVE it, to use more wisely during school. my 2 cents... |

I plan on getting an FRS on my 22nd birthday come November. I will be a senior in college and i rent a home. I do however have a good paying job/internship in IT.
My father also will be asisting me somewhat, not because i'm spoiled, but because he's proud of me for good grades. I've been paying all my own bills since the beginning. I dont understand all the negativity? I've been in a car club and going to national gatherings since i was 10. Started racing at 16 (autocross, drags, and roadcourse). I honestly believe i'm a better driver than easily 3/4 of the US population, regardless of age. I'm a very defensive driver and always have been. I baby my 3000GT like its made of glass, and it shows in my driving. Why people instantly assume someone under 20 is incapable of being a good driver i don't understand. Maybe I'm unique, but i don't like all the negativity towards someone because of their age. On track though, everyone does have a point with money. I have my finances planned out for the most part. I'll be taking advantage of Scion's college grad program, getting $1000 off my car. I'm saving money, selling things i dont need, ect. I fell in love with the FRS and i need a car that i can rely on to get me places. My 3000GT is on its 3rd Automatic transmission and needs to go. I cant keep putting money into it. I want a car that is fun, good on gas, and is reliable. The Frs is that. /Rant :P |

Man this thread blows my mind. I grew up owning some pretty nice cars but I never even dreamed about buying a new car at that age. Regardless of who you owe, 15k at 18 is a huge financial undertaking. Seems like a ridiculously bad idea to me...
Never get in debt with a bank or anything... And how do you expect to build credit again?

Neither did I when I was your age, but the fact that we older ones have been your age, while you have yet to be our age means the majority of has have the edge. As I always tell my much younger sibling about how stupid she is and I know it's a fact because I WAS STUPID at that age relative to my age now! We offer the benefit of our hindsight, use it or ignore it, but don't ever claim no one tried to warn you.

Again, I'm not trying to get in a debate here about young verse old, just want to point out that there are many young people out there who are good and responsible drivers. I don't know about the OP because i really didn't read much of the post, but i am speaking for myself. That's all.

So to answer your question yes, he doesn't need to build credit if his Dad is going to float him the money each time.. but I highly doubt his dad is going to float him 300k when it comes time to apply for a home mortgage.

It can affect insurance rates. It can affect the ability to get a job, even if your field has nothing to do with FInance or money. There are other examples. You can avoid this by having a credit score of Zero which is possible if you have no transactions for about 3 years. Then companies have to do more logical work. You can get a mortgage with a zero credit rating, you just have to use the right broker that does it the old fashioned way with much more paperwork. I have a very high credit rating but its only because of my mortgage. When that is paid off, I'll have to work to get my score to zero because I don't carry debt any longer other than my mortgage. |

I'd pick the FRS, but that's because experience tells me that RWD is more fun in most cases than FWD. Personal preference, really. I test drove a NA Veloster, and I don't hate it, but the interior felt pretty cheap.
And really, any car can get you into trouble. I learned to drive on a high 11/low12 88 Mustang GT with nitrous. I got one warning from police ever, and I know I was doing the speed limit, so I'm pretty sure it was more of a "hey it's 2am and those kids are in a fast car, pull them over" moment. I got into more trouble in my 00 Celica GT-S and my 03 Protege5 than I ever did with the Mustang, and they had a fraction of the horsepower. Quote:
Once I worked for a while and figured out what I wanted to do I went to school. I don't regret it and feel like it was a complete waste like some of those other people, and I'm actually using some of what I learned. |

Wasn't looking for a fight so no worries. And your right I don't know you and you may be very responsible for your age as was I when I was younger but I can say for certain that with age comes way more wisdom that just can not be appreciated at a younger age. It's just a fact. As responsible and intelligent I was then, there is no question I'm much more so now than then and can only appreciate that is the truth now. Now of course there are some, as they get older they don't bother to mature but statistically they are the exception not the rule thankfully for all our sakes!! Believe me the old saying that "youth is wasted on the young" is so true as you age!! . It's the old adage of "if I only knew then what I know now!"
