Honda to race in 2016 Global Rallycross with Olsbergs MSE

Quote:
Honda has released the first image of the Civic Coupe which will make its debut in Phoenix in May, at the opening round of the 2016 Red Bull GRC.

The Red Bull Olsbergs MSE team competed last year with Ford Fiesta STs, Sebastian Eriksson finishing runner-up, and 2014 GRC champion Joni Wiman taking fifth in the final standings. Each scored one win.
Developed from a production-model 2016 Civic Coupe chassis by GRC championship-winning builders Olsbergs MSE (OMSE) with technical assistance from Honda Performance Development (HPD), the turbocharged Civic will boast more than 600 horsepower.

Nick Lee, national advertising manager, American Honda Motor Co, Inc. said: “Global Rallycross is seriously extreme racing, and it's a terrific platform to showcase the new Civic Coupe to an enthusiastic, performance-minded young audience.”

Olsbergs MSE, owned and founded by six-time European Rallycross race winner Andreas Eriksson, has long been synonymous with Ford. As well as Wiman's success in 2014, Olsbergs MSE Fiestas have taken Tanner Foust to two GRC crowns, and Toomas Heikkinen to one. The company also won the teams title in FIA World Rallycross in 2014.

YUCK!
But I read in yahoo automotive that the S2k is due back out in 2018 focusing on the Twins and the Miata, and Honda will release a new RWD sportscar to go after the Supra. Always thought the S2k was a Supra chaser

I have to LOL at this.

Honda is designing itself into the grave.

Bigger, uglier, and more "efficient" every year seems to be their path.

I just cannot see them creating anything small and/or sporty.

Well, that's the plan with pretty much every automaker. Nothing new there....

I can't blame just Honda.... Pedestrian crash regulations necessitate the bulbous hoods we're now seeing.
Although some designers have managed to make it look decent or even good (the current IS series makes it work beautifully), I guess econoboxes haven't received the same treatment yet.

That being said, ever since 2003, it seems like Honda's styling for new models has gotten successively less inspired. I actually think the newest gen Civic (weird hatch/trunk notwithstanding) is moving Honda back in the right direction.

There's a bigger market for economical affordable cars and that's what they've always been to me. Obviously there's a couple exceptions like the S2K, NSX, etc. but Honda has never screamed sports car to me. So my point being I don't think they are aiming for sports car with the civic. Plus I don't think it looks as bad as everyone is making it.

I actually like the wrap around taillights. I think they're kind of unique.

The designers and engineers really need to drive a late 80's to early 90's Honda to understand why they were so good before, and how they are not so good now.

As someone who was raised in 80's hondas I know what you mean however i do disagree with your point. the reasons being, below.

Safety regulations have made almost all cars look and feel bland. but at the same time car firms cannot sell cars that are unsafe, It's simple logic.

as our friend said here, Hondas have always been affordable, reliable, and safe. True they have made some truly excellent sports cars, but for the average buyer is almost never looking for sporty. they want affordable, reliable, safe cars. All that said I think Honda and other car firms got the message that the cars have to at least be decent-looking because if you all remember in the early 00's almost all the cheap cars looked like hot garbage.

I will say, while i do like this civic, I think it's predecessor was much better looking.

If Mazda can figure it out with the new Miata, I hope Honda can follow suit.

My favorite Honda line-up is from model year 1990, there wasn't really a model I didn't like. Good times!

EF is still my favorite Civic. EK was when Honda started to lose its ridiculously low driving position / forward visibility, but still handled amazing stock imo. Can't say the same about what came after.

I should've mentioned that while it is hard to do, it's not impossible and for Mazda, I will say I wasn't a huge fan of the NB and NC namely the NC reminded me of a bar of soap.

but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

personally I think Honda should just make a 3-door Fit based off of the GEAR concept from a few years ago and call it a day.
