Which kit is for me?
Hello everyone. I usually just lurk around and read but recently I have been thinking of purchasing a supercharger.
I bought this car september of 2015 as a gift to myself and I never knew anything about the car before I bought it. I didn't even know car forums was a thing. Since then I joined local 86 groups and started attending meets. That is where I met my current boyfriend of 4 months who also has an fr-s. My boyfriend has a kraftwerks kit on his car c30, and I really like it, its fun to drive and the sounds it make are amazing. Now i want to buy a supercharger but I dont know which one would be for me. I have rode in an edlebrock and that thing was scary fast, I like the kraftwerks, and ive seen the jacksonracing on dyno and it was amazing. The most important thing for me in this purchase would be the reliability. My boyfriend has had his kraftwerks for 1 Year + daily driving it with 0 issues, but i have seen so many horror stories on this forum about the "belt breaking". Of all the kits I have seen I love the way the sprintex sounds I think the edlebrock is really fast I think the kraftwerks is nice that you can drive on a broken belt I have heard super good reviews about the jackson racing. I am so torn. Does anyone has any suggestions? I am 13' auto. |

Knowing what you know helps. I would look hard into the kraftwerks kit or Jackson racing. I've heard they figured out that the broken belt issues are related to people utilizing those kits with lightweight crank pulley kits.

I have been following the Edelbrock kit since it came out, and understand that it is a little more expensive than other kits, but you get reliability with the price. They warranty the entire drivetrain (if you have it installed by a professional shop) which always helps with piece of mind. Plus the free tune that comes with it only has the SC function at ~60% of it's potential, making only enough power that Edelbrock feels the stock engine can handle. The good news with this is that if you ever get the urge for more speed, you can upgrade your internals and then beef up your tune to easily make a ton more HP. Downside is I believe it's on the quieter side as far as supercharger whine goes. But they also have it designed so when you aren't on boost, the SC isn't as much of a leech as much as the other SC kits meaning you can keep decent MPG (if you can resist stomping on it every chance you get!)
I don't know a ton about the other kits, so I will leave that for other members to provide insight on. |

^+1 I have had the kit for about 6 mos now and this pretty much sums it up. One thing unmentioned is where the power band is. The Kraftwerks and Jackson both are centrifugal types and have most of their peak power at the top of the rev range, perfect for track duty and those who like to wring out their cars. Positive displacement types like the sprintex and the Edelbrock have mid range peak, perfect for daily driving (passing power without down shifting on the freeway, etc.)
Also note, when budgeting for an SC, you will also want to invest in supporting mods if your end goal is reliability. |

For something like the Edelbrock? If the rest of the exhaust/etc is stock?
It needs nothing. Install and enjoy. |

True, more tire and better brakes are a good "support mod" for more power theoretically (if you plan on going much faster), but not so much for DD and reliability. I'm only on 225 tires and just better pads+brake fluid and I track my car semi regulary

I have the JRSC kit with the carb legal tune and really enjoy it. I did an oil cooler and radiator at the same time cause I don't ever wanna deal with overheating issues or only be able to drive it when its not too hot outside. If you're going FI in any capacity I'd strongly recommend an oil cooler at minimum. Not terribly spendy and is definitely worth the peace of mind.

@VeganGirl: What do you really want out of your supercharger? Do you want low end power? High end power? Power everywhere? What will you be doing with the car? How much power do you want? Will you be using E85? What's your budget?
The more you tell us, the better we can help you. |

Chose the Jackson Racing C30 and installed it about two weeks ago. Love the design, the sound, and the power is pretty dang amazing. Also installed the ACE 350 Header, AVO Cat front-pipe, and Perrin resonated cat-back. Fortunately, living in Oregon, I do not have to worry about emissions laws, so purchased the Flash N Go tune from Delicious Tuning.
The car just pulls hard through all the gears, but also very smooth around town. Definitely no lag in the lower RPM's with the header and exhaust. Will have dyno numbers next Friday!! Could not be happier with my selection. |
