Need Help w/ Roadtrip to Maritimes

Hi guys, in Mid June I plan on packing up and heading off for a road trip from Vaughan through each province on the east (minus NFLD) and back on a solo mission (if you like the itinerary feel free to join). I've got some points of interest and restaurants I'd like to see along the way but I might need a little more help when it comes to PEI. Can anyone in PEI tell me some good roads to hit while I'm there? Maybe even some good landmarks? I plan on taking my car over to the island on the ferry from NB to PEI and then taking the confederation bridge home after. This is the itinerary thus far for reference it's a little choppy right now but it's what I've got after 3 hours of working on it. The confederation Bridge you pay leaving the island. Maybe bridge to PEI then ferry off island? When I went to PEI we just drove around and stopped at some random restaurant. If I took 2 steps and hopped over the railing I would have been in the ocean, that was pretty cool.

Whn you're driving through NoFunswick go check out the worlds longest covered bridge.

While in Halifax you should eat at Darrell's. Fantastic burgers. Also Bicycle Thief is very good, right beside the ocean too! Take some time to walk around the waterfront, and if you're a beer drinker check out the original Alexander Keiths brewery.

I love the east coast and I'm pretty sure I'll be going back at some point this summer with my girlfriend.

If you can free up some time I'd spend more time in NS. Peggys Cove, Lunenberg. Experience the tides in the Bay of Fundy, Hall's Harbour is wicked. Annapolis Valley is very nice. maybe go to a vineyard, Nova 7 is the best wine ever. Wolfville is a beautiful small university town. Cape split is nice.

Here's some photos from my first trip

Cape Split

Look Off which is on the way to Cape Split. Overlooking the ocean and Wolfville / the Annapolis Valley

Hall's Harbour

I should have taken the car down there lol

Nice view of the turbines as you're coming into NS

And this is what your car looks like about 1/3 of the way back to Ontario in one of the worst storms of the year. I went through crazy snow storm, hail, rain, sun, you name it I drove through it that day. My drive to Wolfville took 13 hours. Drive back took 17 hours...

PRO TIP: Speed Limit is 110 through NoFunswick, but the cops are a little more strict on speedin (so I'm told). The cops are also pretty much all RCMP.

Wow dude thanks for the suggestions and the pics. Looks like you had a blast.

Do you remember how much money you spent on gas throughout the whole trip? I'm trying to calculate everything.

I believe it was about $250. But that's straight there, with pit stops for food/peepee, a tiny little bit of driving while I was in the Wolfville area, and straight back (through a crazy storm though). for about 3000km that's not terrible.

I also planned out all my fuel stops so I could get Shell, so I can't say "hey I got XXXkm on that tank!"

I also drove 123 the whole way there, and as fast as the weather let me drive on the way back.

Wow okay that's better than expected. I did my calculations based on city driving (inacuratate but trying to factor in worst case scenario mpgs) and I managed to get like 400 dollars in fillups on the way there which I think was about 3500 kms of driving and about 250 on the way back which is the straight 16 hour trip on the way back no stops.

My usual commute to work is 99.5% highway, and I can get 600km on a tank. That's not on Prius tires either.
Don't forget gas is more expensive in Quebec.

My girlfriend went to Acadia and continued living in Wolfville afterwards. You must be the guy she always told me she saw lol

I do want to go back, but honestly the whole week long trip to get there isn't for me. There's for sure some stuff to see along the way, but in my opinion Nova Scotia is the place to be. Besides, I'd have free places to stay there :p

I don't know if you're going all out for this trip, but have you thought of camping instead? I'm not a camping type of guy really, but last summer when we moved my girlfriend back we stopped at a campground in NoFunswick. We were able to get a tent and the campground for less than the cost of a hotel. Might be something to consider.

Talk about a coincidence. I just graduated from Acadia last year. I can see one of the buildings on campus out my window as I type this. That definitely would have been me that she saw haha. It's a pretty small university, I may know who she is (but unfortunately I can't tell from your avatar pic LOL)

The GF and I camped across Canada/back through the US 4 years ago, saved a ton of money. Expect ~$30/night for a camping site. I see 600/tank roughly as well FWIW.

From my girlfriend:
I would recommend staying at the best western in fredericton, they are super friendly and have a great breakfast. its also close to the downtown and just off the highway. I would also keep driving to Antigonish, and not stay in New Glasgow, its kind of a dump and at least Antigonish has a beautiful university and lets you be one step closer to Cape Breton. Definitely add in Peggy's Cove and the Halifax waterfront. AND the Annapolis Valley. Amazing views, people and good food. GO to the Library pub or the Naked Crepe. 2 Doors Down in Halifax is delicious, it's all local products and the menu changes all the time. ENJOY!

Thanks guys I just got back from work between this and the motorcycle forum I'm taking notes. I'm gonna do some switching around of the itinerary tomorrow.

Edit I think my biggest mistake was calculating the cost of the gas at city mileage ( I usually fill up after 450 kms so I used that standard). Do you guys get 600 kms before the light or 600 nearing empty?

I've never pushed my luck, but some guys in the Ottawa club have saiud you can go below the empty line. My 600 is near the empty line, and I think I've stretched to 620ish before.
When I'm fueling up I stop when the pump stops too, I'm not adding until it overflows.

I can give you my Shell "route" if you like.

Sure send it over.

I think my biggest fear of this trip, especially if im going to end up going alone, is hitting a moose or something in this car. I can't see that ending well even in its best case scenario.

I live in Saint John, used to live in Halifax, and am from Cape Breton.

There is a much greater variety of hiking in Rockwood Park (Saint John) than Irving Nature Park. Both are great - but you don't need to drive on gravel in Rockwood Park for parking. Thandi's is excellent food.

For Halifax, I second going to Darrell's for a burger. If you have time, try to make it to Peggy's Cove. It's only about 40 mins from Halifax. Great drive on great roads with an awesome view.

On the Cabot trail, try to check out Mary Ann Falls.

Are you planning on heading to Sydney?

Edit: Also, I've not had much trouble pushing the car to 650 km on a tank, but I've got an auto and some of the roads would be 80km/h - so sipping gas.

Sounds to me that you've got too much of a plan to go too many places, not spend much time in any place....if you can find the time...

I'd suggest Cape Split...best place I've been, a real thrill on the east coast. But it's out of the way...west of Blomidon Provincial park. And possibly a two hour walk each way out to the cape. A real thrill it is to be on beautiful grass, all alone, with your feet hanging over the edge, fantastic view of Bay of Fundy. Beats Niagara Falls as a go to place in my opinion. Of everything I saw in New Brunswick, PEI, and Nova Scotia, Cape Split, by itself was my strongest, best memory.

And if you're going to Cape Breton, a beautiful drive it is there. Don't miss Meat Cove and the tame foxes just near there, on the side of the road. Camping at Meat Cove as well. And make sure to ask if Pilot wales are visible at the time of year you go (west of Cape Breton as I recall), and ask from where best to view them.
