The BRZ/FRS just looks like it's baller status, especially in lower income areas like mine and apparently Steve's. People think the car is worth twice what it really is.

I agree they look a little exotic, but once you see the Scion or Subaru emblem, reality sets in. Don't get me wrong, I do love the car.

98.883426% of the general population have no idea what a Scion or Subaru emblem even means. Proven statistic. Look it up!

Car guys tend to think their knowledge or biases are common place when reality is totally different.

I work in automotive and even the dudes here (that should know better) thought it was a $60K + car. It fools the majority of people all the time.

The actual emblem/symbol aside, they can read the words "Scion" and "Subaru" and do the math, right?

I agree to an extent though, looking at the car it looks great. My gf had one of her friends over recently and they came in through the garage and her friend was like damn whos car is that?!?

Do what math? Again you are giving the general public way more credit for knowing cars then most deserve. For all most know a Scion or a Subaru is an up scale exotic and costs a fortune. Unless they are actively shopping for a certain car most people just do not follow cars and know the prices or values. That is reserved for car nerds like us and as much as we consider such things common knowledge it really isn't that common.

Doesn't the (civilised) world know what Subaru's are? Scion, fine it's a relatively newer brand. If the general population has a TV, they've seen a Subaru commercial. Love, its whats makes a Subaru a Subaru.

My gf knows absolutely nothing about cars, but when I first got my BRZ, she said "oh, most Subaru's are ugly."

You may be right in there are some out there, but I'd say the majority are aware of the Subaru brand.

Essentially what the other posters have mentioned.

To the general public, the car looks fast and could go fast. The car's body lines make it look more expensive than it really is - a cheap, econo sports car. Also doesn't help that I work in a pretty high income area as well.

I'm not delusional enough to think that owning a Twin = "baller status"

@soulreapersteve

I totally get it, when I first saw them on the streets it definitely gave me exotic vibes, especially lowered ones. My point was once people see the brand badges, they will come to the realization that it's a regular, non-baller, car.

You'd be amazed at how stupid the average person is when it comes to car brands. I know someone who said that she thought Audis were economy cars, and also thought that cars with the Audi logo were Infinitis. This kind of thing isn't really all that uncommon. I remember having no idea what quite a few badges meant, including the Subaru badge, before I got into cars at 15 or so.

I've had quite a few random people think that my BRZ is a $40k+ sports car. They're not very common where I live, which helps.

Nope. Still disagree. The vast majority of people have no idea what ANY car is worth not just Subarus. Those commercials actually can make it seem like it is higher end then it is. People that actually shop the cars may know the price but go out right now and ask 10 people what the average price of a Subaru is and I bet you get 9 blanks stares. Possibly even 10 if in the wrong neighborhood. Hell, I bet you get 4 "what is a Subaru?" responses.
My wife of 34 years that has patently sat as I pointed out cool cars will respond to the question of "what make was it?" with "blue". Most of my buddies can tell you to last detail what any pickup truck is but if you ask them to identify a car they will also say "it is blue".
So yes you group of friends and associates may be able to tell you what the price of any car on the road is but that is why they are your friends and associates. Most of the public is woefully dumb on the subject.

I paid just under $40k to the guy I bought my BRZ from. It's a limited so I got a total steal.

I was once asked how people in Europe manage to afford European cars, if all of them are luxury and expensive. The asker did not realize that whatever gets to the US (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc., that was right before Fiat's return to the US, I think) is not representative of European car production, that there are brands like Peugeot, Renault, Opel, Seat, Skoda, etc.

I bought my BRZ out of state and was driving it back that evening on the highway. I was driving in the right lane minding my own business when I started to notice the traffic starting to pick up, mostly in my general area. I realized cars in the fast lane where slowing down to stare before they would speed back up and resume their normal fast lane speeds. Before I left the dealership, I'd also used blue painters tape to tape off my whole front bumper and part of the hood so the BRZ looked a little odd, almost like a concept or pre-production car. I'm sure that didn't help.
