Like I said, all those horror stories of bankruptcy and debt and a life in ruins are from people who get taken for a ride, nickel and dimed, who's friends are always mooching.

It's easier to pretend to be living the average life imo. Yeah with a billion you could set yourself up in a gated community have that security detail, say fuck off to the average guy that could turn a relationship sour when you flaunt that kind of money, but then your only buddies are gonna be those other assholes who live like that.

Money turns people sour real quick, it's a hard thing to get past.

I cry BS to those "I would keep working cuz' I would get bored" guys. If you can not find enough to do with that sort of money then working ain't gonna fix it.

Besides you and I would have a TV show to keep us (and some random weekly forum member) busy.

Well see I don't know the rules there but here if you win that much you are going to be plastered all over the news. There would be no hiding it. Also like almost any horror story we hear about the winners that got ruined but nothing about the other 95% that lived life royally without and issue.

Yeah, in some (most?) states you can't claim Powerball winnings anonymously. Every one would know/eventually find out. The proverbial jig would be up.

Yeah. i think its under 1/4 that allow you to stay annonymous. Though a few more will let you form an Trust and claim it that way publicly instead of you full name and image everywhere.

There was a news story just this morning in Georgia (one of the Powerball states, and where you aren't anonymous) where they have been considering changing the rules so that you could be anonymous if you "buy it" by donating a portion of your winnings back to the scholarship fund. basically a privacy tax. I almost drove off the road when I heard it...

I wouldn't work 40hrs a week either haha I like your idea of apprenticing part time with a local tuner shop though. I'd probably won't use their shop since I'll have my dream garage in the comforts on own home with a lift, corghi wheel machine and all the tools I need! Do free work for my family and friends or let them use it. One can dream...

I'd probably split the time between that and volunteering. Maybe dabble around a few dream jobs that I always wanted to try. I'd been known as the rich millionaire who works for free.

Yeah I always thought it could be claimed anonymously (in CA, the sunny one, not the snowy one) and I've heard that you can have a lawyer/agent claim the prize for you.

What's a couple million when you've got a few hundred more?

This thread has stumped me, people grubbing for an extra $10 million on top of the hundreds of millions you already have? Jesus, I can't even comprehend that level of gluttony.

Most expensive thing I could see myself doing is going racing, but if you're not trying to compete at the top levels you're only looking at a few million a year tops. Just read a quote that Dale Earnhardt Jr. says his Nationwide team costs $200k/race, that's about $7mil to run a season. And we're talking about enough money to run 10 cars for 100 seasons and potentially turn a profit doing so and still have a few hundred million leftover as a safety net.

Again, these numbers are mind boggling.

Nah, I just don't like giving money to the government. The end.

ETA: It's not that I need or want the extra - I just really don't want the government to keep the change.

In this case (winning the lottery) I don't necessarily disagree with you, I'd roll my eyes and move on. If it were "earned income" I'd have more of an issue.
It would be like the IRS saying that unless you let them keep 5% additional tax on you, they are going to publish your name, and your tax records. It's borderline extortion.

Guess I'm just a byproduct of my 17 years of public education, the government has given me a decent leg up on life. It's not perfect and it never will be but I'll take it over nothing and it can be improved. I also enjoy smooth well kept roads over shitty ones, clean accessible water and consistent electricity but that's just me.

Just look at the current state of internet access or the old Enron scandal for the joys of deregulation.

I'd gladly take the old U.S. top tier tax rate of 90% back in the fifties over living in a true small government country like Somalia. Especially since back then in the U.S. minimum wage could actually put a roof over your head, food in your belly and leave you with a decent amount of leisure time to boot.

My uncle always talks about how he lived in a garage for $50/month while going to college, back then you could work a minimum wage job for 3 months (i.e. a summer at McDonalds 40hrs a week) and have enough money to study full time the rest of the year at a respectable public university.

I grew up and live in the DC metro area. Nearly every one I know works for the Federal government, for a government contractor, for lobbyists, or for a law firm/accounting firm closely associated with governmental work. I'm a little bit jaded about how people spend other people's money.
