For us it is very common for the simple reason there is just no job to promote him to.

It's also common for a transfer to a different preferred job which is rated a rank below, and dropping rank for a period of time.

And I remember when there was no money to pay the reserves - troopies went long times w/o pay.

Much better nowadays after a supportive govt.

Yes! I didn't want to go into that deep of detail but that is very true. I even knew guys that would drop a level just to get to a certain base.

My regular time was spent in the mid 70s to early eighties and the government did not even want to acknowledge we existed much less pay anybody!

It was much better in the 90s when I went reserves but still not great.

Only the last few years that there has been much support at all but that will dwindle again as the economy drops.

I really have no knowledge of such things, but I am pretty sure that in Norway that guy would be a civilian, in a suitable desk job.

I am perfectly aware of that!

SummaryLake effect flurries and local snow squalls have developed in a northwest flow off Lake Huron. The squalls are more intense over the near shore areas south of Goderich towards Grand Bend and into portions of Eastern Lambton County. The snow squalls are expected to shift northward to affect the London area later today or this evening. The squalls are expected to weaken by Friday morning.
DetailsSnow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably, changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.

SummaryA period of very cold wind chills is expected. A strong cold front is crossing southern Ontario and is ushering in much colder temperatures and gusty north winds. Wind chill values this afternoon are generally expected to be between minus 20 and minus 30 across most of southern Ontario. Tonight will be very cold across all of southern Ontario. Although the winds will diminish somewhat, wind chills of minus 30 to minus 35 are expected overnight and into Friday morning.
DetailsWhile anyone who isn't dressed warmly is at risk in cold weather conditions, some are at greater risk than others for frost bite and hypothermia: - homeless people - outdoor workers - people living in homes that are poorly insulated (with no heat or no power) - people with certain medical conditions such as diabetes, peripheral neuropathy and diseases affecting the blood vessels, people taking certain medications including beta-blockers - winter sport enthusiasts - people who consume excess alcohol - infants and - seniors. Wear appropriate clothing. - Always wear clothing appropriate for the weather. Synthetic and wool fabrics provide better insulation. Some synthetic fabrics are designed to keep perspiration away from your body which keep you dry and further reduce your risk. - Dress in layers with a wind resistant outer layer. You can remove layers if you get too warm (before you start sweating) or add a layer if you get cold. - Wear warm socks, gloves, a hat and scarf in cold weather. Be sure to cover your nose to protect it. - If you get wet, change into dry clothing as soon as possible. You lose heat faster when you're wet. Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
