They have both called the cops several times each due to my excessively loud exhaust at 5:45am when I leave for work. Last week I asked a local PO to sit at the end of the driveway when I started the car in the morning and he said it's too loud and I need to do something soon or they will pull my registration. I am at my wits end If I end up having to get rid of the car because of them I will be pissed and will make sure to make their lives hell.

I think next time the closer one starts his 69 GTO with dual glasspacks I will complain. I know it won't do any good though because the old boy network here is unbeatable but it will make me feel better.
They absolutely CANNOT take your car away and you should've told that dumb cop it was totally OEM

I would straight up call bs on that cop

I would cite the cincinatti ordinance that requires it to be no more than 95 decibals measured from 20 feet only allowing for a $25 dollar fine if it does on the first offense...

If you can I would suggest taking it to a certifying authority and getting a test result showing that it is within the allowed maximum.

This is my opinion and i'm in no way telling you what to do. I'm not sure of the NY vehicle codes, but in CA there are laws protecting citizens against unlawful detentions. Everyone here is telling you just to prove that your car is stock, that it's under a certain Db, blah blah blah. I would start looking at the class of crime they are trying to get you for (infraction or misdemeanor) and depending on the crime and class, if they even have PC (probable cause) to continue to detain you or demand that you have to do something. If you were not given a cite at the time of incident, which it doesn't sound like you did then more than likely they are not following their dept. policies and procedures. Good law enforcement officers are there to help people and educate about the law. Not to harass and make their own rules and unfortunately some lose sight of that.

Perfect! You are your neighbors alarm and don't let them tell you any different lol!
I think it's worse where I'm at now because of the fence right behind me and how it's angled.

I said that's unacceptable and I need to be at work 60 miles away by 9am but my needs are apparently meaningless in this situation, it's all about the old folks making the complaints and I need to accommodate them. Not gonna happen. I called the boss but he's out of town until Sunday so if I'm not there we will have a dozen employees standing on the sidewalk and the store will be closed. Wonder how this is going to end up...

Why is it that retired people with nothing better to do seem to run the show? Oh and before anyone asks, no my wife can't take care of it because we are having a new septic tank installed tomorrow so she has to be home.
What is this, mother Russia? Those guys can go pound sand, do you know a lawyer? This is bordering on police harassment and profiling. A quick letter from a lawyer will have them leaving you alone. You haven't violated any laws, the police are overstepping their bounds here.

There are iPhone apps that will measure decibels. You could use one to get an approximation of how loud you are. There's no way you will be over 90 decibels from 20 feet away if you are totally oem.

I leave for work at 5:15am and the cold start is pretty loud (all i have is the nameless axle-back). i turn on my car just before i open the garage door, put it in gear to lower the RPMs, then idle out of the garage. putting it in gear definitely helps quieten it.

Turns out it's not just me. Town council is working on a new noise ordinance because a bunch of the ricer boys in town have silly fart cans like the kid down the street and I just got caught in the melee. These kids like to play on the hill up to my street at night and sometimes it gets really loud so they assumed I was one of them I guess. There are some people that complained about him and sometimes when I pull out from the stop sign at the corner at 5:45am I make some noise too. I pulled a couple of pics of the bottom of the twins from different websites to show that mine is stock so that should cover it as well as a phone call that was made on my behalf from a sergeant in another town vouching for me. Apparently they have tested a bunch of cars already and still have more to go. Stupid shit...

While it sucks that you got caught up in the mix with the new ordinance, certainly you can understand that families with young children might not appreciate them getting woken up earlier due to excessively loud exhaust. The police are just enforcing the laws set forth by your jurisdiction so don't blame them... blame the idiots running full catless exhaust with no mufflers (ie berk) or $50 autozone fart cans.

if you have not already done it make the tune changes to quieten cold start up, it reduces cold startup noise a large amount. even stock its was irritating to my own family due to the low resonanant tones.
mine with catless header and catback now starts quiter than stock with tune changes, it only effects cold start up phase and is well worth the effort.

I would be interested to know how they are measuring the noise.
Interesting write up here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80085 that includes a brief section on how it is supposed to be measured.
