Just to prove my point on how I'm pretty sure on my theory.

Here is an example of my 2003 toyota celica. This is a picture of under the hood taken from today when I fueled up. Right under the huge collection of black spots is my air conditioner pulley and the direction of the belt going around the pulley flings up moisture/dirt/dust debris.

The underside of the hood has never been washed since new. (commuter car) I have lived in climates from 38 Degrees C to -45 Degrees C with this car. So it is improbable for any bug to have lived in the same spot for the past 11 years and survive these climates not to mention underhood temperatures.

I'm confident with my original post and hypothesis.

So my theory that is backed up with evidence is the one I'm going to stick with.

LOL Thought this was a well dead subject!
Not the same pattern, shape of spots, material of spots, type of car or location of possible sources but if it makes you feel better we will declare you the winner!

I don't guess at things. Everything is always open for discussion and any theory better than the one I have is welcomed.

The dots size, material, colour, pattern are totally irrelevant as it isn't even the same car, belt or anything for that matter.

Keep in mind that my celica had never been washed under there for 11 years so there is going to be way more spatter.

If I cleaned it off and drove for a week Im sure I could come up with the same patterns.

The point is I really don't think its a bug or insect

My frs hood is black so I can't see these spots on it and i only have 3500 kilometers on it plus it only goes out on dry days.

The FRS does have covers to stop the spatter from happening and its exactly what they are for.

However the pattern on the white FRS is farther back from where the pulleys are but there is also very few dots.

There is a little black grommet on the clutch housing. I wonder if the OP's is missing

I still stand by my theory though. Being an engineer for this market I just don't see it being from a bug or insect.

I was joking about it being a bug scrapping on this guys car initially, but since this isn't a very serious thread I'm going to point out that our under hood temperatures are not so hot that a bug could live there. There are insects that have been found by active volcanos, I believe the term is the mouth of the volcano, so a couple hundred degrees is nothing. Also I fix air conditioners and find that black widows actually seem to prefer hotter temperatures.

And the fact that the spots look JUST like the spider crap I saw and the OP actually found webs!

About 98% of my posts on this were intended as humour (bet SOMBODY will say I spelt that wrong!) and to entertain but in the long run I truly believe BASED ON THE FACTS that it is just spider crap! As we found no issue with the car that could effect others then I really don't care one way or the other and was actually shocked to see this tread come back to life!

Spent the last 25 years investigating weird and wonderful things (EH&S) and have learned to have an open mind instead of predetermining the root cause then trying to make the facts fit.
But hey... I am not an "engineer for this market" so what do I know!

Hey come on this is only the 2nd, 3rd time TOPS I have had to look at bug poop!
Live rattlesnakes twice, opossums three times and a highly venomous tree frog once (keep in mind I am in Canada!) but not a regular bug poop
inspector.

Dude let it go! Told you already that you can call yourself the winner if it means that much to you!!! Over 25% of your posts on this forum since you joined back in June have been arguing over bug poop with a guy who is just joking on 98% of the thread!
I was only kidding when I said the topic kept me awake at night but I am starting to think you really are not sleeping!!!!!!!!!

The frog was taking a poop when the rattlesnake ate it, and the rattlesnake was taking a poop when the opossum ate it. POOPCEPTION!

Let me know if they get to the bottom of it! My car is running fine so I'm not too worried, but would be interested to know what it is.
