finally i had the time to make a measurement of the frequency response of the Ca-Fi:

All equalizers off, tested with the build in Music-App and Poweramp.

It is bad, really bad. Worse than the original HU. For those who do not know these kind of measurements: If it would be good, the frequency response would have the same volume in every frequency, in that case the line on the picture would be like this ----------------------------

But the Ca-Fi is loosing -6db at 200hz and is boosting +7db at 50hz.

If you are not so into Hifi, this is not really a problem. But in the eyes of an audiophile....

Before puchasing this unit, i asked them if the frequency response ist linear, they said:

Hi Stefan,

It is linear. The shipping normally takes less than 5 days.

Best regards,
Will Zhang

I'm not an audiophile, but why isn't it important to test with equalizers on? I mean, the point of this head unit is to make it do exactly what you want it to do because Android is so customizable, so shouldn't it be tested with Viper or any other audio processing software that some of our rooted people are using?

Compare it with an jpeg-picture. If it is really small and you are enlarging it via photoshop - the quality gets worse. Thats also customizable, but it is not getting better.

You can´t use an Equalizer as you wish without generating distortion or clipping. A little bit is okay, about 3db perhaps. Normally an Equalizer is not used to make the signal of a bad Headunit better, it is used to eliminate reflections from the windows or absorptions from the doors etc. If you already have a but signal at the beginning, the outgoing signal from the speakers will be much more worse.

But i will do further tests and i already mailed Will. He said the frequency response is linear - it is not, so my unit must be broken ;-)

I will do further tests, also measuring when the Headunit is clipping.

Keep in mind, the HU isn't the only limiting factor in sound quality. Cheap speakers or cheap wiring will make any HU sound like crap. Furthermore, how high do you have the volume turned up? The more you crank up the volume, the more likely you are to get distortion.

I personally don't have Viper and don't know much about it, but I was under the impression that it was more than an equalizer. Am I wrong about that? I really can't figure out exactly what it does from their site or the XDA thread. Maybe it replaces whatever application processes audio in stock Android?

Sure it is Not the only factor. But the First Factor of any sound System. Shit in -> Shit out. In this Case the HU Sounds wrong out of the box.

It was Not loud. But the Volume does Not change the frequency Response, only if it would be really to high.

Sorry my english is Not perfect, it is hard for me to explain why this is Not that good.

A little off topic - however - this was one of the awesome things handled by sending my ca-fi down to OemAudio+. Sandy was able to run a test and tweak their amp/DSP to the characteristics of the ca-fi. Of course, they do the same for the factory HU. And FYI - Sandy judged the ca-fi as being better sound quality than the factory HU. Just throwing that out there.

Is there any other place to pick up one of these head units other than the official Ca-fi web store?
The head unit plus the bluetooth obd interface and a 49$ shipping fee is a bit too much for my liking.

My Dashlinq4 arrived earlier today.

I got the dash panel off and the old HU out before I had to head to work. I was going to work on it a bit during lulls between customers and on my break, but I'm a bit overwhelmed with all these different wiring connectors.

I'll be looking back through this thread to see if I can figure it out, but if anyone could give me a step-by-step on how to hook up the new unit, I'd be extremely grateful.

FYI, it's a BRZ I'm putting it in; I've got the antenna, Aux, and USB adapters linked elsewhere in this thread, but I'm as confused on those as I am on the HU itself.

As far as I know, no, new units are only sold directly through Ca-Fi's website. You may be able to find one on ebay or craigslist, but you'd need to make sure it's the 7" Toyota Universal version.

I'd try send another support request. The time I sent one in, Will responded in a timely manner, and helped me out.

Can't get OBD2 Bluetooth adapter to work for the life of me. Tried with my previous adapter and then purchased one recommended here from Amazon.I even tried a USB one I had lying around. Torque tells me it can connect to adapter but adapter can't talk to Ecu. I've tried on head unit and on my phone actually with same results.
I have Open Flash Tablet and just flashed Stage 1 tune again to make sure there's nothing wrong with the port. Any ideas?
