Actually the wheel base is shorter so it rotates a little easier. Getting the car to rotate isn't as hard as it seems.

I agree completely. I'm running nearly OEM everything and I can get the car to rotate with a little power blip or lift at the wrong (right?) time. He was asking how to make it super twitchy though. I can't see the livelink video, but if it's the one I saw yesterday on Youtube, it's a red corvette chasing a black S2000 through traffic. The S2K driver was super rough with the steering wheel and rotating the car to make abrupt lane changes.

Sorry, I don't see anything special there I didn't do in my old beater Corolla. The rear end is just loose which is why it looks like it 'pivots', it's just slow to catch up and you can see it jiggle side to side like, well...nvm.


Better question. Can a S2000 do this?

His psychosis is progressive. Maybe start 2 minutes in and turn sown volume. I reckon another poster is right and he's just extremely twitchy and the s2000 is just obeying

Okay current or former AP1 owners, what are your thoughts on the AP1? I've never driven an AP1, did own an AP2 (2004) for a couple years. Been looking around and so far the only decently priced, low to mid mileage S2000s seem to be the AP1s. The AP2s seem to be demanding a premium, especially the low mileage unmolested ones. I've found a few 04/05 AP2s that were not too overly priced and had less than 80,000 miles on them, but few and far between not to mention they were way far away from me.

I had an AP1 for several years, and it was fantastic. It definitely had different torque characteristics than the AP2, as you would expect. You definitely will notice the on/off characteristics of the VTEC (yo!) on the earlier cars, as anything under 6500 rpm is pretty tame. Once in the power band, the car wakes up. If you are hustling, you will need to shift near 9000 to keep in the power band after the shift. Other than that, there weren't any big differences, just trim and minor things. Make sure you look for top wear behind the corners of the side windows, but as a former owner, you probably already knew that. The first year cars had plastic windows, which are bigger than the glass ones but require maintenance to keep clear and pretty.

If I go with an AP1, I'll probably try and get a low mileage no issues 02/03 model. Otherwise, I'll go with an AP2 again. Biggest decision on that front is go with the 06+ models for the DBW feature. I can see the benefits, only issue is that the 06+ models that are low mileage and in good shape are commanding premium money. I've found some pretty decent 04/05 ones for around 15K. At least I am not in a rush so I have plenty of time to wait for the right one to pop up.

I searched for a good six months and gave up and bought the BRZ. Any in good condition the seller wants way too much. I wish I didn't sell my AP1 4 years ago it treated me well for 7 daily driving years.

I used to own a MY01 AP1 and have driven several AP2's (my buddies and I traded cars from time to time) from 04-05 to 06-07. To me, driving dynamics are very similar between AP1 and AP2. The torque in an AP2 makes the car come alive sooner.

I like the interior of the AP2 a lot more. One extra cupholder, thinner door panels gives you a little bit more space (it is noticeable especially if you DD it). I upgraded my rear plastic window to glass from an 05. The plastic just did not hold up well and my AP2 soft top frame fit tighter when top is up (no rattles).

AP1's are more affordable but will be tough to find one that hasn't been trashed. AP2's seem to hold up a little better. You already know that.

I do like the DBW feature in the AP2. But I would remove the CDV. I drove one without CDV and it felt much more natural.

Honestly, I could go with either one. I would just fine one that is well kept/maintained. Valve adjustment if over 100k miles. And go topless.

UPDATE:

So after much advice from this thread, I test drove an AP2 S2000 and a 2015 BRZ and here are my thoughts:

S2000 Pros:
1- That engine is a marvel. It sings and it has a very smooth and while not quite linear, it a has very satisfying increase in ramp after you get past 5k RPM to 8k.
2- Shifter was fan-friggin tastic. SUCH SHORT THROWS. Definitely did not miss a shift due to the transmission.
3- VERY SNUG seating - I'm not fat fat but it was snug and held me in place. Could be a con for others.

S2000 Cons:
1- I'm only 5'10" and had a hard time finding a proper seating position? No tilt wheel meant my knees and hands were hitting each other if turning wheel with hand at 5 to 7 o'clock positions. I need to reinvestigate this.
2- Rag top, $$$ to replace - mine had a minor rip that I can only see exponentially getting worse.


BRZ Pros:
1- Seating was much easier to adjust overall than S2K
2- MUCH more cargo space
3- Better steering feel than S2K

BRZ Cons:
1- Odd high engagement point for clutch (ja ja ja - I know about this but was still oddly surprised)
2- Engine has a sweet spot but then falls off either side. I've driven lower power vehicles (my old MR2) which didn't feel as bad. Once I got about 4.5k RPMs, it felt good then after 6.5k RPMs felt like it wasn't doing much. My butt dyno tells me the best was around 6 to 6.5k RPMs.

Right now in my autopsy of the event - I need to reinvestigate the S2000 seating position again before I can truly determine which to buy. The S2000 brought more smiles to my face but was tarnished with having the top up (it was freezing today) and the issue with the seating.

Will let you guys know.
