Also consider Opti-Coat if you want some protection against small rock chips. It makes it much easier to wash clean as well.

Well, here's my brother's 2007 Subaru STi. It has 45,000 miles on her, and yes, she is very dirty (bugs). But you'll notice there are only 4-5 black spots from where the paint has been taken off, and that's because we dropped it by accident when we took the front bumper off. Only one of them I see being a rock chip, and that's the one at the top of the bottom lip.
![]() (VERY high res Here.) Keep in mind, we've driven from Connecticut to Florida and back in this thing, so she's seen her fair share of roads. Used to be a northern car, and we used to offroad it, hard. (So hard it's missing her fender linings...good times. ) So you're saying that since 2007, the paint has degraded in quality? This is the SAME EXACT Satin White Pearl color code as the Whiteout FR-S.

Thats interesting because I had a WRB 2007 STI, hence my name blu_, and its front bumper after 40k miles really needed a respray. It was god awful, like someone had sandblasted it. That paint is also water based.

That is really weird, I have a black one, with no rock chips...Could the fact that we bought our cars together in CT have any change on the paint quality?

It could be an issue with quality control I guess. Maybe you just had a better paint job. I know there were issues on the 2008 STI where people had paint chipping/flaking off the hood. |

Yeah, I initially wanted whiteout going to the dealership, but they had the asphalt on display. I had never even considered asphalt until then. It was either raven or whiteout. But I fell in love with the asphalt. You have to see it in person. There's just so much depth in that colour. Not to say the whiteout isn't gorgeous. I still stare whenever I see one in the street. I really don't think you can go wrong either way. It's a car that's just so easy to love.

My original choice was Whiteout but fell in love with the Asphalt once I saw it in person.

Went to the dealer to look at a Whiteout or maybe one of the shades of blue, walked out with an Asphalt on the spot...

I absolutely love my whiteout. Wouldn't change my color selection if I could. But I finally got my first chip after a year+ of ownership (only like 3300 miles) and man does that chip drive me insane. It's so easy to spot! |

OP here is my opinion,
While it is good to consider things like after purchase maintenance on the paint and how it holds up/shows differently, I would focus solely on the color itself. If you buy a color just because it shows chips less, you might end up regretting your decision and kicking yourself for not getting what you wanted. Don't ever settle for any color than you really want. Since you are down to those two colors, as much as Whiteout is outplayed, I'd still vote over Asphalt. As I have said before, Asphalt is a good color, but I don't think it's suited for the shapes and image of this car. Now, that similar shade I think looks great on a car like the new Corvette C7, as it just works very well. Whiteout flows on this car extremely well, as white does on the LFA and IS-F. Granted those are Toyota based paints but even the 2000GT (similar lines) fits very well in white. My only gripe is white has been overused due to the euro scene explosion, and the younger generation has eaten it up. Just my opinion. |
