Really good point and actually something that has been somewhat glossed over. That probably includes multiple synthetic oil changes, tire rotations, and other standard maintenance items for free, so the difference is actually more then the $1300 - probably closer to $2000.

It all depends on the buyer. I drive less then 5000 miles a year which on most newer cars adds up to one oil change a year. I also switch between winter and summer tires/wheels so I don't need rotations.

All told in the past year my maintenance has added up to less then $100.

If the service is anything like the FB20 that the FA20 is based off of oil changes will be at 3k, 7.5k, 15k, 22.5k and 30k. That gets you 4 free oil changes and what 2-3 free tire rotations? An oil change is like $60-70 at my Subaru dealer for full synthetic oil change. Most people on here will do that themselves. Rotating your tires takes 15min to do yourself. You are definitely not getting $700 worth of maintenance.

The difference seems to be in the finer details/accessories for the front bumper.

It certainly makes more financial sense for the two companies to handle it this way. They can source one base part, and then apply the small pieces for each companies "unique branding traits."
Hard to tell. I admitted it could just be the way the bumpers are cut that makes the headlight housing look different and maybe they aren't. I don't think we'd know unless we had two right next to each other

Your last sentence I believe is why I would have chose the Subaru in the end. Its really a Subaru with a few select Toyota add-ons. Thus I like having the badge of what I'm actually driving on there. My mind started thinking that way for some reason after owning my first car: Acura Integra. To me I felt a bit stupid for having a Acura badge on a Honda. So for me personally? I like the badge to reflect what the thing actually is! (Also living overseas in the UK and seeing they didn't have to lie to themselves about what they were driving... Then again Lexus was there and Infiniti was starting to make a move into the market...)

Guess it depends how much you value your own personal time

I don't care about the time. Tell me how much you think 4 oil changes and 2-3 tire rotations is worth. Cause you put the price at basically $700.

I guess it's going to come down to a test drive of both of them.

I'd be making concessions with any model I'd end up getting anyway.

I'm older and I'm just wondering if the FR-S interior will be tiring (visually) after a while. The BRZ does have a more subdued adult feel. And I wonder, as I approach my 40's and have kids, if the FRS is too much/too busy...

Hrmm.

It costs me about $20 and half an hour to do an oil change myself. If you pay $2000 in maintenance on your brand new car in the first 3 years you have yourself a lemon.

I use a lift and air tools to work on my car. It's pretty easy.

Well I'm coming from Porsche so 700 for maintenance in two years is not out of the question.

Even if we limit this to only synthetic oil changes, that could easily reach 300-400 dollars in costs over 2 years. Anyway, the point is that is a non-trivial amount of money of value added to the Scion.

Alcantara is a trademarked material. It actually feels a bit sticky/grippy when you touch it and is used in sports cars for a reason. Its durable, not slippery, looks upscale and I haven't met many people complaining about having Alcantara in their cars.

The premium seats cloth looks like a similar material to the newer WRX seats and should be good at repelling stains.

Whether or not you like any of these is your own opinion. At least from my own experience bolstering and seating position matter more than seating material when it comes to keeping you in your seat during spirited driving.

The car will require 5.8 qt of oil. So will have to buy 6 qt of the 0w-20 oil, will probably run around $7-8/ qt. Depending on your favorite oil brand you could end up spending $50 on just the oil (unless you have a connection/discount from somewhere). Filter will probably be around $5-10.

He was saying $700, which is high especially since free maint only covers the required maintenance.

That means 7.5k, 15k and 22.5k oil changes. Tire rotation may be spec at 15k, who knows, and the "multi point inspection" aka "yeah it looks fine". Oh and if it's a Scion, every maint time includes a free check of the drivers floor mat installation. So maybe $200 worth?

Scion roadside is 2 years, Subaru is 3.
