I thought of that as well, I am going to get quotes on both, but the problem is that any rate differential may not show up until a few years down the road, after those demographics become available to the actuaries.

True, plus I would like to be part of a group buy that we are doing in the GTA. Should have got off my ass and gone down to the auto show to see both! But I would never commit to either without driving either a BRZ or FR-S first, if I have to wait so be it.

Anyway I suspect Subaru will make the decision for me by charging a fat markup relative to their US price.

Scion TC RS 7.0 is only $1528 for me (One at fault accident)
Genesis Coupe 2.0T is $1408

The genesis coupe is cheaper to insure than any other car on the market though which makes absolutely no sense.... but that's Ontario.

Just wanted to point out that the Subaru BRZ Limited is $2000 more than the base Subaru WRX 5 Door in the USA. If that's the case in Canada then it will be $35000+. The BRZ premium would be $33000. That's assuming Subaru uses their standard 30% raping stick. Scions 7% looks really, really great from where I'm sitting.
Manual Transmission: $27,495
Automatic Transmission: $28,595

^ It's a considerably cheaper car (the tC), so this rate difference does not surprise me - it attracts a younger male demographic and we all know what that means to accident rates etc. My Tib is penalized the same way. But the FR-S and BRZ are much closer to the same price so I don't think there may be that much difference in rates there.

Toyota was product planner. That means Subaru engineers did what they were told to do by Toyota. If they didn't meet requirements they were told to do it again. Plus Toyota had to show them how to do it first anyways with the first mule.

Still I would prefer the BRZ if Subaru Canada decides to not try to rape us on this model.

Yes and no... The Genesis Coupe is THE cheapest RWD vehicle you can buy to insure for me. I don't think it's a coincidence that the Genesis Sedan is in the top 10 least stolen vehicles in Canada. Maybe the insurers think the Genesis Sedan and Coupe are the same car... who knows.

The Canadian price for the base WRX 4dr starts at $32495.00
Would the brz be priced higher?

Scion FR-S: USA $24200 Ca: $25990 Markup: 7%

If history is any indicator, best case scenario is a 15% markup on the BRZ which would be $25495 * 1.15 for $29319. Even if they only do a 10% markup, it will cost $28044. I can't see how the BRZ premium is worth $2000 more money.

Subaru Pricing

Impreza: USA $17495 Ca: $19999 Markup: 15%
Imp WRX 5d: USA: $25595 Ca: $33400 Markup: 31%
Forester: USA $20595 Ca: $25995 Markup 25%
Legacy: USA: $19995 Ca: $23995 Markup 20%
Outback: USA: $23295 Ca: $28995 Markup 24%
Tribeca: USA: $30595 Ca: $38995 Markup 27%

I was quoting the WRX 5 door which they charge an additional $900 for in Canada. The 4/5 door are the same price in the USA.

Anyone feel that the more conservative colours of the BRZ might indicate they are targeting more mature/affluent buyers here to justify a significantly higher price? I'm calling 20% over US price.

A 20% markup over the US price would be lower than average for a Subaru. How sad is that?

As was pointed out elsewhere, Subaru will be (hopefully) more constrained in pricing the BRZ due to the fact that it has direct competition; there really is no competitor to the WRX (the Mitsu Lancer Ralliart is considerably down on power and performance) so they can charge a big premium for it.

It's pretty obvious that kids right out of high school or in college are far more likely to go for a 19k tC than a 26k GC. It's demographically-correlated driving habits of known buyers that primarily determine insurance rates, not the car specs themselves. That's why a faster true sports car (the MX-5) would cost me less to insure brand new than my 13 year old Tib (I checked)- the former is driven by middle agers who don't speed or drive recklessly, the latter by the 18-25 set who do.

(And believe me nobody is stealing 13 year old Tibs.)
