Just watched some of the videos -- thanks for uploading them. I'm sure most of you know, but using voltage as a SoC indicator is wildly inaccurate under either charge or discharge conditions, and for several hours after either. Voltage in lead acid batteries drops under load, that's just the nature of the beast, the recovery afterwards has little to do with recharging. You're going to want to measure charge in and out, or impedance of the battery if you want anything like a state-of-charge indicator.

It'll be interesting to see how long those batteries last. For 10 seconds of boost you're pulling maybe 5% out, which is hardly a deep cycle, and that's good. What's more concerning to me is the charge cycle. Presumably the DC-DC is sitting on the battery interface so that it only has to manage 20A rather than the 160ish going to the blower, but the problem is that recharging batteries in series is not ideal as you tend to overcharge one of them. Overcharging a flooded isn't so bad as you basically just add water, but you do not want to cook sealed batteries. Hopefully there are smarts in there somewhere that can prevent that??

A123 batteries would totally rock in this kind of application, although figuring out how to recharge them is a pain as well. Great cycle life and pretty awesome at delivering amps. Too bad that company is having problems....

Interesting observations. I know that Rob has went though many trials over the last 3 years and the performance to simplicity of these SLA batteries is hard beat. Rob has programmed a lot of smarts into the controller from my understanding to protect against various situations.

I'm not the expert though... I'm just the one driving the pants off this thing everyday to test it thoroughly.

I have been following this topic for a couple days now, and can't wait to get my hands on this system.

How can I get my hands on one of these kits?

I actually have a number of 'extra' A123 20ah cells. I am using 384 of them in a 4p96s configuration for a high performance electric car conversion, you can read about it here: http://infa944.blogspot.com although the blog is sorely in need of updates.
Anyway, I was thinking that I could put together a 2 or 3p7s pack and mount it in place of the glovebox.

Interesting review by wild wiesel of the smaller kit installed on his car. Go to the middle of the page for the video.

Note that I tested both a smaller and a larger blower. If you've got any questions for me, by all means let me know. I'm happy to help.

Quick update

Rob is starting a small production run, I think most of these are going to customers to finish testing. Rob said that my car should be getting a update soon once a couple more of these test units get fitted.

As for my car it is running great. Mileage is back down to the normal amount even with all the boosting I am doing. Bu-tang is currently on vacation and he left his car at the dyno for fine tuning. Once the new compressor has been thoroughly tested it will be fitted to my car and we will see what we can do. Personally I am hopping for 230 HP so we will see what we can pull out of this kit!

If you have a auto and are in Calgary email Rob through the phantom website.
