To me , fast or quick (not necessarily 500+ HPS 200MPH monster machines a miata or FR-S will do) and control is the goal, setting up cars is what we do to help get there. And it's all fun when things are progressing in a positive manner.

So you are recommending VSC on, it sounds like. Some say off other say on. If leaving VSC on will help me be smoother, that is exactly what I'll do.

Chuckwalla was the first time I did not see any progress in terms driving or riding ability or lap times. Actually regressed. So I guess you can say it was the least fun I had on a racetrack. lol Still fun, but depressing at the same time. I hope to change that with some pointers and instruction. My friend with the Cayman S OTOH he was hitting all his goals for that day getting faster each session out. Ended with a 2:08 flat on KW V3, some beat up used mismatching RS-3's, sway bar, and some alignment tweeks he did in his garage himself. Now, he had a lot of fun at Chuck's.

Edit: I want to add that my second track day with this car you drove my car a few laps with me in it. You did not say much, but you did suggest that I turn the TC completely off (as did the previous coach did at buttonwillow)IIRC. I was not able to learn much from the experience due to lack of communication verbally and the huge difference in our pace (super fast vs super slow). You seem to be pushing the car pretty hard as evidenced by the constant corrections with steering you were making. All I got from that was "damn that guy is fucking fast" Clocked you at 1:33 with harry's timer. I personally did a 1:38.9 before the heat got to me (113 degrees ambient when I checked) and headed home. No videos doe to the overheating iphone. Car only had RS3 225 (same set I used at chucks) on RPF1 17x8, a set of camber bolts, and about 2500 miles on the ODO nothing else.

I'd recommend you run 0 toe in the rear, and learn to control the car.

A larger front sway will only make the car understeer more at terminal, and make any oversteers come on faster/harder. Roll isn't a bad thing. Have you seen who much roll we get with 10k/12k?

If your objective is lap times, then leave TC/VSC on. If your objective is to learn to drive the car, then turn TC/VSC off. Right now, at your level of driving, the two are mutually exclusive. You need to decide which is more important, your lap time or your driving progression. I'll tell you now that focusing on your driving will ultimately result in faster times.

I make a lot of small corrections because I'm trying to stay on the right line, not because I'm fighting for control. If I were past the limit of grip, there wouldn't be any grip left to correct with.

I've said this over and over: Seat time is king.

Agree on the tire sizes. The guys out here who I've seen racing them moved down from 275 tires to 245 because they handle better with them.

Being an official for a few different race series here on the East Coast, we've used tire widths to slow down cars that were over powered for a class. In particular a spec Cayman series I work with. The Gen 2 cars have a 35hp advantage over the gen 1 cars so they decided to require a wider tire on them which has slowed them down considerably in the straights while providing no additional grip in the turns.

Learning how to drive based on theory without application is like this example:

Why is that you haven't timed yourself? Are you no longer trying to get faster? Or just don't care about lap times any longer? Very interesting, but probably not a mindset I will be in or understand any time soon. But yes I definitely know the value of practice. It applies to anything, so no need for analogies. Lol I hope to get out there much more often as well.

I've been away from the track for a long time so I'm focusing on my driving skill rather than absolute times. Even though I was lapping approximately 2:04 to 2:06 at CVR that one day in my own car (based on video and times from other cars), I cared more about taking the right line and learning zero counter more than laptimes themselves. It will translate to sub-2 minutes in the future, but for now, confidence and driving skill are more important.

As you already know, being smooth always translates to being faster. Timed or not.

I also don't remember when I last timed myself other than as you have anecdotally for reference. You KNOW when you have a fast lap and when you have a tense lap that isn't fast but feels fast cause you did it all wrong.
