Spent the weekend at NCM, first time on that track. Fun course after you get to know it, ran brand new Kumho V720, lots of grip.
Day 1 was cold but dry, 45 all day. Started with a 3:28.595 and ended up with a 2:47.646. Could have dropped more if the session hadn't been cut short. Video for the fast lap was corrupted, so this is for the previous fast lap 2:49.561. I know I can brake later in some areas, less in others and use more of the track. Started with a 4:32.266, ended up with a 3:17.952, switched to Continental DWS. I was told there is no good wet line, so I had to figure it out on my own. Note some of us run well over 200kw at the wheels (230kw on most other dynos) but use EBC's to turn the turbos down somewhat simply to help with traction and to better suit our local tracks. Mind you we don't run Aero or big track builds so we are limited on grip. Good Suspension and R-spec Semis are what most of us run. |

I'm asking for an opinion on motor oil: are there any benefits of using 5W-20 or even 10W-30 on hot track days (80F .. 90F)? I was using Amsoil for years on other car and they offer only 5W-20 or 10W-30 racing oil.
(Car never goes out when temp < 50F). TIA! |

You will maintain better oil pressure at higher temps with a thicker oil. Persnally I will never put anything but 0W-20 in my car. That being said I have an oil cooler so no need for me to go with a thicker oil. A 0W-20 will also get a slight (very very slight at track temps) increase in HP over a 5W-30. A 0W-20 will also get slightly better fuel economy but who cares about that on the track ![]() TL;DR Use a 5W-30 on the track if you do not have an oil cooler |

I use 5W-30 on track with an oil cooler. I'm also supercharged.

Here's our test results of running 0W-20, 5W-30, and 5W-30 w/ oil cooler on track.
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91820 Basically, 5W-30 is "mandatory" and an oil cooler is "a really good idea." |

I run 5w30 with an oil cooler. But I got no data, just basing my decisions of the experienced guys on this forum and thread. I'm relatively new to track but I hope to get some more experience and data logging equipment in the near future.

Honestly, unless you're REALLY frugal... buy a kit. I was able to source the stuff to build a 'Perrin-ish' setup with everything they use except the hoses for about $150 less than buying the kit. But I still would have had to make the hose ends and they were braided steel instead of the nice coated ones and didn't have nice crimped ends and the parts didn't have the lifetime warranty... So I bought the Perrin kit.
Mishi is even less expensive so you'd wind up saving even less money trying to build it. Basically, unless you really like to fabricate your own stuff, want to save every last dime possible, or need some custom application (like mounting behind a fog light or at the rear of the car with a fan, etc.), most people wouldn't find the trouble worth the savings. |
