Yeah like he said a beginner will be ok but advanced you want an oil cooler.

I'm hearing a clunk from the rear now with my Carbotech pads back there (never removed them from the track day). I haven't had a chance to take the wheel off inspect it yet.

If I put the car in reverse, then hit the brakes normally, it clunks loudly. I can even feel it. Car otherwise drives normally. I've read online that it could be the pads or the axle nut. It's never done it before and I've been using these pads back there for a while. Will put on the OEM pads soon and see if it changes.

Any thoughts?

Clunking or clicking? Clunking could be the pad; they're intentionally made slightly small to account for expansion at race temps (metal expands when its 1000F +)

Clicking on any *load change* is the first sign of your axle's inner CV joint going bad.

Feels like a somewhat forceful clunk, only when I put it in reverse and hit the brakes for that first time. Ive ran the Carbotechs on the street before and never had it. I'll swap in the OEM pads and see what happens.

In my experience that's normal, the Carbotechs on my GTI do that too. As Mike said, they're track oriented pads and made to allow some expansion.

The only reason I brought it up, is that it didn't do it before. Just seems odd that it decided to do it now, many thousands of miles after I've been running them on the street.

Topic shift, but I didn't see it mentioned quickly skimming through this thread. What is the general recommendation of using an oil catch can/separator on an N/A engine? I use one on my other car that is boosted, but it needs it desperately. Not sure if an N/A BRZ has the same issues.

Thanks guys!

Always a good idea to have, but not absolutely necessary.

Not sure whether to ask this in the oil section or track section, but here goes. This is regarding the diff.

I am smelling diff fluid after my track days. Is this normal?

Backstory:
During my previous track day i was on 75w90 Motul, and the diff fluid smell came after the track day, so I swapped it out for 75w140. The diff fluid smell did go away for awhile, or maybe it was some placebo effect going on.

However, after my current track day, the smell is back. The unmistakable god damn awful smell of diff fluid. I have checked for leaks but no avail... Thoroughly confused on where the smell is coming from... Any advice?

P.S. This is my first car with an active diff..so am not really familiar with all the quirks of it :P

I believe the pumpkin has a breather valve on it.

What kind of tires are you running, how long are you lapping sessions, how much power do you make, and how experienced are you?

Are you sure you're smelling the diff specifically?

Do you still have the stock LSD or aftermarket?

Thanks for the response

I am currently running 255s AD08R on the rear. Lapping 20 mins per stint. Stock power and still an amateur trackie. It is freaking hot on track thou, ~38 deg Celsius ambient temp.

Not really smelling the diff directly, but the last time I diagnosed this issue, when I popped the fill bolt off the diff, the exact smell came out of it. I'm concluding based on that.

It's a stock LSD.

If there is indeed a breather valve, that might explain some stuff.

38C is not that bad; we test in weather as high as 51C.

Check your transmission as well... are you a AT or MT?

I recommend getting your fluid analyzed to see if you're overheating it.

Thanks Mike for the advice, will get it analysed when I get the chance to. Do you recommend I swap out the current fluid now?
