hey,

i got a few questions for you

i'm running 225/45/17 rs3 with 17x8 wheels, -2.5 camber and 0 toe on the front, -1.5 (i think, dont have the alignment result sheet on hand), 0 toe on the rear.

running 38psi hot front and rear.

What hot pressures should i aim for with those rs3's? (ill have to invest in a pyrometer at some stage)

also if you had a choice between 17x8 35 offset wheels or 17x8 45 offset wheels, which would be best suited for track (offset wise)?

thanks in advance

I had sustained oil temps over 270 at Roebling Road in August with no cooler. It was nearly 100 degrees out at the time. We can debate all day whether those temps cause synthetic oil to shear or not but I believe that the ECU is making major adjustments resulting in more power loss than we realize. According to my Solo data, my speed went from 104 at the exit of turn 9 to 120 at the entrance to turn 1 braking at the 100' mark. Gaining only 16 mph on that long of a straight does not reflect anything near 200hp to me. I have the Robi cooler going on this week and I will be back at that track the first week of Dec. I can't wait to see the straightaway change, would not be surprised to hit 125

38 hot is pretty close. Most people run 36-38 with RS3 on this car, including myself.

No way to tell if your alignment is good without either tire pics (not the best), or pyrometer readings (much more accurate).

+45 is better.

I've seen no correlation between engine failures and lap times, with oil coolers.

We need more data and feedback from the community to really judge this.

Does it hurt to have one? Absolutely not.

@Deep Six: 270F doesn't bother me. It's nothing to be worried about with a high quality oil.

thanks for the advice

here is a pic of the front left tire (now swapped to the rear) this tire shows the most outside wear.

Regarding the oil cooler, my butt dyno tells me the car is down on power when the oiltemp goes up. Perrin had a great breakdown of this in their exhaust development thread. I'll try to dig it up.

I think the issue is poor word choice on behalf of the HPDE instructors. The word "ALL" should be replaced with the word "MOST." Most of your heavy braking should in fact be made in a straight line.. but you mustn't lift off the brake prior to the turn-in, but gently release as you transition into the turning arc.

It also depends on the type of turn. Fast-entry, low-speed, high-angle turns are a nightmare for true trail braking.. and would most likely overload a novice's abilitiy... because you'd need to adjust your entry and exit lines. A lil too much for beginners i think.

What to take away here is that there are many instructors that know what to do and what to say but they don't know why they are doing it and don't realize that the words coming out of their mouths don't relate to what they are doing.. but that's another matter.

I had an instructor tell me to start experimenting with trail-braking yesterday. It made a nice difference getting the car to turn-in on some of the slower/medium speed corners. It felt very natural, so my instructor thought I might have already been doing it subconsciously to some extent I don't know.

What I found surprising was how planted the rear end felt. I was almost expecting the rear end to come around under medium trail-braking, but that didn't happen. Is that normal or are some part of the nannies/EBD still active even though VDC/TC is fully off?

Im not sold on it; I ran it in my BRZ on track for two days and it caused the oil temps to get a bit higher than i'd like; in the 290's, once I switched to a 0w20 (Toyota OEM oil) it brought the oil temps down about 10 degrees. I did Blackstone UOA on the GC 0w30 and the Toyota 0w20 and the Toyota offered just as good protection as the GC in terms of wear metal readings.

Lower oil temps, good protection and cheaper/easier to get - I have been running the Toyota OEM 0w20 ever since. I change it out after 4 track days (2 weekends).

W -2.5 at the front it still worn the outside edge that much?Um...may be a wider size tire needed?how's the grip/performance increase from stock?

Yeah thx, just trying to find out, if oil cooler is not needed then I could spend the money to some other parts

if you're transfering weight properly (gently, evenly) it is in fact normal
