Fair Service Price?

My local Toyota dealer quoted me at these prices for a 50k mile service. Is this fair? Seems high honestly. Is there anything here I don't need done?

Hello Alex,

Here is the list of the recommendation

#1 Performing BG trottle body service to remove carbon buil inside the intake system $91
#2 air flow meter service to remove carbon and deposit $80
#3 Brake flush $131
#4 Drain and fill rear differential $144
# cabin filter and ultrasonic mist to clean vehicle's vent and remove molds $136
Thank you again for giving me the privilege of serving you. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.

wow. most of that is BS that they are just trying to upsell you on. the cabin filter and spray for 136 actually made me laugh. it's like a 14 dollar filter that you can get from the parts department and replace in 7 minutes. not sure how handy you are but the brake and diff flush can be done at home for a small fraction of that.

Service 1 and 2 are kind of a scam. If you have carbon in your throttle body, you have bigger problems. Generally those two services are just spraying some cleaner on the throttle body, and pouring in some fuel injector cleaner.

#3 and #4 are almost reasonably priced. A little on the higher side, but not too crazy. They're not bad ideas at your mileage, that's for sure.

#5: you can change the cabin air filter yourself. It's like a $20 dollar filter, and takes all of 5 minutes. The mold and vent cleaning is likely unnecessary, unless if you smell mold or mildew. If you don't smell it, skip it.

lmao classic quote of a "service interval". after the first time I took my car to a dealer (almost 10 years ago now) I never went back.

Ask them how much of that is in the service manual as required. In fact, does our car even have a 50k interval? lol

As for the list only thing you might consider is brake fluid and diff? Cabin filter you can do yourself for the cost of the filter ($20)

Throttle body and air flow cleaner no need. And I'd say they might fuck up your sensor if they clean it.

Bottom line. Fuk them. I get they gotta make $ but just preying on people who don't know under the guise of "being the dealer" is tantamount to a scam IMO

Yeah this is what I'm seeing. Hard to believe they tried to scam me so obviously. Kind of pisses me off.

Yeah I'm telling them to do brake flush and diff and throwing in transmission fluid change as well (time to go to motul 300 I guess haha). Gonna do the air filters myself. F**cking BS lol

Be happy though. I actually paid for a dealer service once. I didn't know and felt kind of like wtf did I just pay for after. Did some research saw I got ripped off.

Been doing my own service since. Even if you can't do your own service definitely research what you need and look for an independent shop if you can. If you can't find independent just tell where you go the services you need. And if they try to sell you something else tell them you aren't sure you will let them know.

WTF, $136 for cabin filter and some motherfucking mist spray? I just went to a local Toyota dealer last week, picked up a cabin filter for $30(you can probably get it elsewhere cheaper) and it took me a couple minutes to swap.

There is no such thing as a 50k service.

Intervals:

45k, 52,500 k, 60k.

Dealerships are normally full of shit !

>Read what came with your car, do those services solely.<

Me personally:
My 2015 FRS (manual trans) has now 26k on it. So far I've done the oil and filters at 7500 mile intervals....and plan to always continue that, tire rotation at same interval as well.
The cabin and air filters I can check myself, clean them, or replace them as I see fit. And certainly I can replace washer fluid, wiper refills.
Honestly, I'm not gonna do much of anything else till it needs spark plugs or coolant change...whenever the book, my book states it should be done.
Looking now: Spark plugs at 60k, coolant at 137,500 mi...after I'm dead for sure.
Brake pads: whenever I rotate tires, I'll look at them.
Battery fluid level: check once in a while...yearly, close enough.
I most likely won't ever change brake fluid, trans fluid, or diff fluid...let the next owner deal with that. Who's gonna know but me...LOL.
Former Auto Tech here.
The car is Made in Japan...so give her only what she begs for, and she'll do just fine.

Nothing, I mean it, has gone wrong so far with my car. Zero warranty claims so far.

Thank you again for giving me the privilege of serving you. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask...LMFAO !

I'd forgo that other crap just get the dif done and im not sure why they excluded the tranny and spray some TB cleaner in your TB if its that mucked up and as is always, cars will not get much build up if they are driven like they are supposed to be, at least that's been my experience

Ultrasonic Mist? WTF is that? Cabin filters are a rip off, and not something we ever needed in the first place. But go to advanced and get one put it in yourself

Most of that looks like BS service packages the boss is trying to push, if you wanted the logical work done (diff fluid, brake fluid, replacing cabin air filter) an indy shop should be able to do it much cheaper.

Changing the differential fluid takes maybe 15 minutes. If you can change your oil you can change your diff fluid.

Even with fuel injector cleaner wise, we don't need it because with port and direct injection we have a sort of self cleaning effect.

As @toysub said this cars intervals are not like the other shitty cars that service advisor deals with and also scams as well. I have attached a pdf so you don't make this mistake again.
