Interesting new dash camera system on kickstarter

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...stem?ref=video

Waylens camera. I for one will be watching this closely. Looks reallllly nice, and has functionality and ability to sort through clips. I remember reading a thread here on how the dash camera market is mostly cheap and poor quality cameras, which this is not. And from the looks of it, less expensive than systems like gopro.

This thing looks amazing if it ends up doing what the designers envision! Something to keep an eye on for sure!

As with any kickstarter campaign, it is a gamble. You don't know for sure what the end product is going to be like. I like kickstarter, but I don't have much faith in the more expensive ones lol

I wonder if there is a warranty or how big the battery is. Heat damage is one major concern for dash cams. The other one is battery life.

Interesting... but what does it have to do with the FR-S? I think this should be in the General Automotive Forum.

I honestly was not sure where to post it, sorry. I was just over excited about the product in the moment. IF it comes out.

dont need battery. Connects to a/c in car.

I'm looking to get this during black friday shopping to record all the numbnuts that I encounter up here. How's the low light recordings?

@soulreapersteve,

Low light sucks unless you within 2 car distances at night. Also, if you face sun/dawn etc... it sucks. But, it's better than nothing and should cost about $100 minimum. Make sure to get capacitor one because other one overheats!

Here's how I break it down:

1) License plate capture 8.5/10
2) Distance capture (zoom ability) 8/10
3) Cost 9/10 (i'm cheap)
4) Low light 5/10-6/10 @ night
5) 64gb capability 0/10 only supports up to 32gb, but I formatted card with a online program to Fat32 so now it works with 64gb! so 8/10
6) Video files 5/10 because I cant seem to get them to transfer to my adobe program. Only viewable on VLC
7) Heat resistant/durability 9/10 (120 degree inside car)
8) Look 7/10 (could be better)
9) Problems/ease of use 8/10
10) Would I recommend to someone else? Yeah. 75% sure I would. If you can afford Garmin one though, buy it! $200+

Overall, I am content. I wish it captured lik 200 degree angle or something. But, I prefer for it to record in front of me and see what I see when facing forward.

I met some of their team at SCCA autocross events this year, where they were doing some prototyping.
  • The market is a legit value stream (people with money and not enough time).
  • The innovation is solid (no one is operating in this product space).
  • The project scope is simple enough (bluetooth OBDII exists, Torque app exists, and post-processing of dashcam videos is common enough).
  • The team seems good (only interacted with two of them).
  • Features and hardware improvements will allow for hardware turnover and repeat sales.
It all adds up to a likely situation they'll succeed.

There are still some challenges with packaging the product for cooling and battery life. Connection reliability and app functionality will take some debugging. They're moving fast and seem to be doing well thusfar, though. Good luck Waylens team!
