Upcoming Nova Scotia Road Trip
Hello friends from Nova Scotia!
I'm planning on a road trip to Nova Scotia from the Boston area. I'll probably be stopping half-way (with some really bad math) in Acadia National Park. I'm planning on going through the the different road trips on the Nova Scotia travel website, but I'd love some input from anyone familiar with that area. I'll be taking my FR-S, so good driving roads recommendations are certainly welcome. Thanks! |

I would wait until after Sept 1st as the camper vans, trailers, motorhomes etc. thin out after then.

I was there early July. If your visiting for the drive, you can't miss Cabot Trail. Breath taking. Hell, the whole province is beautiful. Set some time aside to cruise and you won't be disappointed.

To second TCoat, if your driving that far, make sure the Cape Breton Highlands are in your agenda. I have to confess I haven't had the car down to Dad's homeland yet, but it I have a trip planned for the end of September. That little section in the picture is a blast to wind out anything that handles well in.

Try and stay off th main hwys, and follow along a coast you can't go wrong, I did it last year including the Cabot trail, which BTW is amazing, I would recommend to do it clockwise. Camp in cheticamp national park or is it provincial but it's beautiful and cheap. Not to mention lobster dinners in cheticamp are cheap! $24 for two for 1-1/4 lb each.

I have lived in Nova Scotia practically my whole life and I presently live in Halifax. If you want to cover the province here are a few great stops and roads (somewhat in order West to East).
Annapolis Valley - Several nice spots here; Cape Split is a great hike if youre into that sort of thing. Wolfville is nice, stop at Joe's food emporium and get Scottskins. South Shore - Make your way to lunenbourg it's a must then drive along the shore through Mahone Bay, Chester and keep going. Halifax (optional) - it's a city, there's lots to do and see in Halifax but unless you have several days to do it, there's not much point. Most bars per capita so if drinking is your thing then you may want to stop here. Route 245 / 337 - On the way to Cape Breton there's a route which follows the northern shore of mainland NS and loops back around to the main highway. I havent actually driven this one yet but I heard its an amazing driving road. Cape Breton - Baddeck routinely makes the top "most beautiful towns" list its a good place to start your drive through the highlands. Drive the entire Cabot trail. Dont bother going back on your footsteps to save time, drive the whole loop. there's whale watching in Cheticamp youre into that. Make your way to Lick-a-Chick near North Sydney if you have time and have yourself some world famous chicken. Other then that Cape Breton is a dump, dont bother going down to Sydney. I'm sure I missed some stuff if you have any questions let me know! |

I agree with the others, Cape Breton is amazing, especially the Cabot Trail. While you're on the island, I suggest stopping at the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck, the Fortress of Louisbourg, and the Glen Breton distillery.

Hey, just noticed you probably would be going by Moncton, NB, on the way. If you do, you HAVE to stop at the Magnetic Hill. I remembered going there as a kid, so when the wife and I were driving through on the way to Newfoundland 10 yrs ago or so, we had to check it out again for nostalgic reasons. I thought it would be lame, but it was actually pretty fun!
