Lug nut torque investigation?
I was scratching my head about how high the lug nut torque is after 5 of my wheel studs sheared off last time I pulled my wheels.
Even more curious to me is that the current Impreza, which has very similar running gear, is apparently 92 N*m (according to a quick internet search) compared to the 120 N*m the BRZ calls for. Anyone look into this? |

Are you confusing N-m and ft-lb? 90 ft-lb = 120 N-m....basically every lug nut Ive ever tightened has been to this spec and I have never broken a stud.
Ive had the wheels on and off my brz at least 300 times....still on stock studs. |

I had some tires installed in January. I'm guessing the wheels were installed with an impact. Sent from my XT1045 using Tapatalk |

I only let tire places mount the tires to the wheels... will never let them put the wheels on the car, I do that myself PROPERLY by hand and then torque down to 81ftlb! Too many issues with tire places in the past...

May as well get some cool studs like ARP's, and use a torque wrench, while not letting dopes near your car. That solves most of the problems.

Why not be a little nicer? Yep, got ARPs on the front now to accommodate spacers to accommodate my new front calipers. |

It's possible they could have been weakened by improper install (install with impact) and just so happened that they reached their breaking point at the most recent install even under proper torque.
Be careful with your other lugs in the future. If you sheared 5 off, chances are a good amount of your studs are probably on the edge as well.

That's a sure fire attitude to get your car messed up.
How many mechanics in the US do you think can convert to/from metric in their heads. Learn to speak the language of the natives and you will get much accomplished. It is sad that the US still uses "archaic units" but denying that fact is not prudent. |

But really. Does anyone have any ideas as to why the BRZ would have different torque specs to other Subarus, when it shares parts, or did I just find the wrong info for other Subarus? |
