Track Junkies: Harry's Lap Timer, worth $20 bucks

Download an app for iphone or ipad called Harry's Lap timer, well worth 20 bucks, over what a dedicated device costs

http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Home.html

Was recommended to me by Vortech, enjoying it so far tho I havent had it out on a track, it got the POIs for the ones I go to!

Appears you can configure for more than one car and add sensors
cool!

I know TemeCal was using it and was pretty happy with it.

I'm a Android user, so I just downloaded TrackMaster. $5.99.

I'll run it this weekend and see how it does. I pulled down a map for Streets Of Willow yesterday and configured the split markers. I think this time I'm just going to run the TM on the phone and use video from the GoPro's. Then I guess I have to install a program on my laptop to overlay the TM on the video. I'll try to play with that on Sunday.

I used it last event and it's great! It was extremely accurate compared to the track transponder. The overlay is awesome! I used a phone mount that has a suction cup, and stuck it to in the inside of the windshield. The app records video and puts the overlay in there too, check it out.

I've watched your video many times already. I'm curious about what you need to do for processing/posting the video. Does Harry's handle all of it so you just upload to YT, or do you have to run everything through another program to overlay the TM on the Video?

IIRC it's all done by Harry's. I highly recommend an external GPS antenna with it; Harry's is hit or miss when it comes to properly working.

Also recommended by them, afr, oil temp are actually more significant than boost, to me. Our obd gives plenty of warning for both

Harry's Lap Timer does not do everything for you. It will record the raw video, and then you go to the video library inside Harry's Lap Timer. You then select the video, and then it will give you an option of "Overlay". Click that and it will add the overlay (it takes 5 mins or so to process). After that, you have to export the video. You can't upload to Youtube from Harry's. When you export, it will save it in your Camera Roll. From there you can upload it directly to Youtube from your Camera Roll (use Wifi) or you can connect your iPhone to your computer and download the video from your iPhone and then upload it to Youtube. That's what I did, then the movie will stay 720p resolution. If you upload straight from your Camera Roll to Youtube, I think it compresses the video and resolution suffers.

To touch on CSG Mike's point more, I've had no issues with accuracy yet, but it depends on the track oh how strong the GPS signal is. SOW is good. I heard Chuckwalla isn't good at all, and Buttonwillow is marginal. External GPS is definitely the way to go if you don't want any issues at any track you go to.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I was curious about the process. Using Trackmaster I have to export the TM file and the video to a computer and do the overlay there. So that's an additional step in the process that I'm not fond of. Hopefully in the future they'll make it more streamlined.

You can do it all on your phone. In Harry's, select the lap in the lap list and press overlay. It wil, spend a little time processi g, then save it to your camera reel on your phone. Upload to YT from there. Very simple. With OBDII you get a lot more info.

I was really impressed with Harry's Lap Timer. I compared every lap from the transponder with the lap times in Harry's Lap Timer. Every recorded lap time was very close - within 1/10th of a second. It was so good, that I'm not sure I'll be running a transponder on future events (unless the rental is free).

You are correct about the video from your camera roll going to youtube. The quality is absolutely horrible. However, there is an app (I think it's called 720tube), that will upload it to YouTube in HD.

I'd easily pay the $20 for Harry's Lap Timer. Very much worth it to me.

While I think Trackmaster and HLT are great entry level tools, you guys will want more in-depth data from an external antenna and/or a dedicated datalogger.

Harry's sounds really good. Wish it was ported over for Android.
Might have to "borrow" my wife's iPhone....

As an update, Harry's Lap Timer is supposed to be available for Android first quarter 2013.

The day it goes android is the day I sell my iPhone. HLTpro is the thing that keeps me with apple.
