New user, question about buying a FR-S, 19K OTD price.

Hi everyone,

I talked to a dealer today about a 2013 FR-S base, the car is Firestorm Red, it has had 2 owners, and roughly 15000 miles. I managed to talk him down to 19,000 out the door price. Could someone walk me through the buying process? I'm meeting the dealership next week and I'd like some help.

The $19000 OTD price covers TT&L, Taxes, Title, and License. This should be the price that covers everything. Does this transfer the title over to me? My current plan is to drive the car home and garage it for the winter, but the Michigan DMV says I must register the car 15 days after I receive the title, and to present my insurance, but I don't plan to get insurance until spring!

Am I over thinking this? Can anyone please walk me through the final stages of the buying process?

Also what do you guys think of the price? 19K OTD is a good price? sales tax is 6 percent in michigan. so the car price was negotiated down to almost exactly 18k.

Thanks in advance!

That sounds good. I was getting quoted low miles on used 2013 a few weeks ago for around 22k. Thats minus tax and regi. I know someone on here said its better to buy in the winter. California doesn't get winter discounts lol

december is definitely a good time to buy a sports car, no only buys a sports car in the michigan winter let alone a manual one, better deals for the rest of us.

i would recommend you checking out cargurus, the site is pretty sweet. any input on the vehicle registration process? I did more research and it appears the dealer takes care of all that, but i still wont have insurance so I dont know how i can get my car registered.

Not sure how your state does it but California has somewhere like 30 days under your current insurance. Although I just called the next day and added it on. Also regi is dealt with your dealer. You should be paying for your tag when you buy the car.

Be sure and do a good long test-drive.

Two owners seems a little strange to me.

Price sounds okay.

Good luck!

...i dont know how to "thank" you in this forum but thanks for the help! that link was helpful.

It seems like the dealer will be doing all the work. The only vehicles I've bought previously are from private sellers, this is the first time im buying from a dealer.

Any things specifically I should check on the FRS before i make the final decision? I'm pretty mechanically inclined when it comes to cars, any common problem areas, places to check?

here is the carfax:
http://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory...DB852B9B7E7B80

I found the carfax sorta weird too, the first owner was normal, had it until 12/2013, 15798 miles, then it became a lease vehicle for a credit union company. Then the next reported mileage is 15798, in 10/2014, which means the vehicle was driven only 600 miles in 10 months? Then it went on sale. Not sure what's going on here.

I already have a deposit on the car so I'm going to check it out, but if its a no go thats alright theres plenty of FR-s in the sea .

I'm pretty sure this means the credit union repo'd it. First owner probably financed with them.

Its possible the person who had bought it the second time didn't qualify for a loan so he/she had to bring it back. My dad told me a story about a old Corolla of his from the 80's. Brought back 5 days later after he couldn't get qualified. He had already put over 1000 miles on it because he went to vegas.

You have to remember Carfax gets information for the insurance companies after claims. So a minor fender bender may cost a 1000 deductible but in the end it only cost 500 to fix. Id rather pay the 500 and not tell the insurance.

i'll be very careful in inspecting this vehicle. i just hope the guy wasnt pissed off and beat the chit out of the car before it was taken away from him!!

thats interesting i never thought about that, i wonder if this repo thing is going to be a problem.

Edit: Also, if I buy a CPO, certified pre owned vehicle, can I only bring it to that dealer to get it serviced or any scion dealer? This has always confused me.

Just remember if its a repo that means the guy was trying to keep the car and the lender is trying to get it back. Also you never know. It might not even mean anything. Carmax has a 5 day return policy or 3. So it could have been a used car that was returned depending on the dealers policy. Wouldn't consider that a repo at all. They won't repo a car that fast anyways. 7 days lol that means his first payment was less than 7 days. It will take a few months, calls, and them bugging your family asking where you are.

In storage you should have comprehensive insurance only...which is quite cheap. Assuming you already have another car registered and insured, possibly this car will automatically be covered for the drive home from the dealership...yet best to ask your insurance company before any driving after the sale.

And are you sure that is actual out the door price ? Does it include DOC fees (documentation), which can range from $80. to $380...I've seen on FRS sales.

Must have all that in writing !

And when you get to the finance dept., after the sales dept....Tell them you want nothing extra...no extended warranty, you'll get your own loan, nothing from the parts dept...like floor mats, undercoating, paint protection, anti-theft, etc.

And find out in writing how much remaining on factory warranty in miles and months. Any warranty the dealer gives itself is all bs...worth nothing.

I've purchased other CPO cars and the warranty follows your car. I can't believe Scion would be any different.
