I've currently got stock wheels on, and I'm thinking of going to 18".

The current stock tyres are 205/55/R16.

I'll be going with 225/40/R18.

At the moment, I find driving the car a little bumpy on Sydney roads but it's still bear-able. How much worse/better would the ride be with my new wheels?

The ride should be much harsher going from 55 to 40. If you already think it's close to not being bear-able, then I doubt you will like it, at least from a comfort standpoint. That size of tire isn't made for comfort, it's made for looks and stiff sidewall cornering performance.

Note too that the combined weight of your proposed wheel and tire will be greater than your present combination. Depending upon why you're finding the car to be a little bumpy on Sydney's roads, this difference could result in even worse performance from the standpoint of comfort.

What if I went with something like 225/50/R18? Or even 55?
I'm not too sure why those tyre specs aren't available on the wheel package deal though. Is it because they're much more expensive or they just won't fit?

The rims will be 18×7.5 , would 235/50/R18 or 235/55/R18 fit?

Uh some of those tires are over 4 inches larger than the stock tire size. I doubt they'd even be close to fitting.

Ditch the 18s. No matter what you do, they will ride like shit.

Roughly 1.5", not 4". Diameter maybe?

But those size are SUV caliber specs, why even bother lol, stay with 17" if you want comfort and descent look

Are you sure that is the right size tire on your stock 16s? The 86 GT comes with 205/55R16s stock.

Sorry my bad, it's 205.

So if I were to go with 17" it'd be exactly the same as the stock GTS. How different is the ride for the GTS from the GT?

The type of tyre you choose will also have something to do with the ride quality. I am told the stock Yokohamas that come with the 16s have stiffer side walls than the Michelins on the 17s and so the ride is similar between the two.

Honestly if I were you I would just see if some guys from the local 86 club will take you for a spin with their various wheel and tyre combos so you can see for yourself.

Actually I found a set of 17" rims that I like even better. So if I were to go with the stock GTS specs (215/45/17), there shouldn't be any issues?

Is the stock GTS higher from the ground than the GT or is it lowered?

I can't tell you if the GTS is a different height, but if you stick with the OEM size you shouldn't have any issues. If you choose to go to a wider wheel and tire, try to stay around the same overall diameter of OEM.
