Intake system question

OK, I've searched, but haven't found an answer.

Looking at the engine compartment from the front, to the left of the inlet filter box is attached a black plastic box. What the hell is it...what's it do?

It's a resonator so it keeps the sound quiet. Aftermarket ones typically start removing them so the intake noise picks up a lot. You will notice a lot of stock intakes on cars have these all over.

It's a resonator. It helps make the intake sound cooler. Just like the big tube coming off the left of the pipe.
