Opti-Coat 2.0 vs Opti-Coat Pro

After getting this question quite often I thought I would share what Optimum has to say about the differences between the two products. Also to show why you want the Pro coating over the consumer version.

Pro is thicker yet flashes faster so leveling has to be done faster.

"What's the difference between Opti-Coat Pro and Opti-Coat 2.0?

Opti-Coat Pro is a more concentrated professional version of Opti Coat 2.0. It takes more care to apply and cures faster. If applied correctly, it should provide a thicker coat.. but will vary with application methods and amount used. If the same installer used both in the same manner, Opti-Coat Pro would be thicker. Professionals will prefer Opti-Coat Pro because they can give the car back to the customer sooner without concerns about exposure to the elements and it will reach full hardness faster so its ready for real world exposure sooner.

Consumers will prefer Opti Coat 2.0 because it applies like Opti Seal which is very easy. You can easily cover an entire panel before it flashes, you have more time to spread it over the panel before you'd have a problem, and if you do have a high spot that dries you can fix it by hand with Optimum Finish instead of needing a machine and compound. Less experience an effort are needed.

As for the resin, the attributes and performance are the same with both: improved scratch, chemical, and environmental resistance/faster cleaning with less effort/dramatically less chance of etching from leaving contaminants on the surface. It may still stain, but won't permeate like normal clear coat will even with waxes/sealants applied.

The main difference is cure time and thickness per application."

If you want a thicker coating of Opti-Coat then opt for a professional.

How much should an authorized installer charge to apply Opticoat Pro, aside from the normal paint correction cost?

my girl likes it thick, but... I will have to live with what I have just the 2.0 and not the pro.

have to get it re-applied after my dent is taken care of though

Whats the cost difference between the two? Also, what benefit does the thicker coat provide, since Opti-Coat is supposed to last for quite a long time - is it better protection or even longer life?

well.. the new opticoat 2.0 formula allows you to layer the opti-coat 2.0 as well.. so you could potentially just layer them thicker than opti guard XD

What put me off a bit were reports of this only lasting a few years before needing reapplication. I don't get the lifetime claim on the Pro version if it needs to be reapplied, yet the 2.0 offers the same attributes as the Pro? Doesn't make much sense. What is defined as 'lifetime'?

I would like to see where the report that opti-coat only last a few years comes from.
Because this product only came out for a few years.
Maybe you have mistaken this with the Cquartz? which is not permanent.

The pro version applies quicker and thicker, so less room for mistakes for the applier.
How ever, you can still layer opti-coat 2.0... which resulting the difference between them is mostly time issue.

How ever, remember that opti-coat, while permanent, it's just a thin layer of extra paint. and can only be removed via abbrasive.

If you are to detail your car, refine/polish your paint every year, then yes, off course it's going to be worn down.
