17" wheels that look more like 18" wheels by design.

So I have decided that proformance over looks might be the best for me. So I am looking at going 17"x9. But I want your guys opinion on which wheel looks more like a 18" because of the design even though it is only an 17" wheel. For example I think that the Rota Grid looks small when it is a 17" and looks much better actually being an 18" wheel.

Your thoughts and photos please

Thanks

I think 17 inch Rota Titans look great in that size:

I agree. They look "bigger" than they really are.
I would like to see what a little wider tire looks like with those Titans.
Maybe 255's

Any wheel where the spoke meets the flange/lip, and also concavity helps as well.

This is pretty spot on. Wheels like the OZ Ultraleggera and TSW Nurburgring will always look bigger than wheels where the spokes drop off like the OZ Alleggerita and BBS RGR. Unfortunately, wheels where the spoke meets the flange seem to be heavier by default. Most of the really light racing wheels seem to use a larger barrel.

Indeed. IIRC there was a wheel designer who once posted here that talked about how concave wheels were generally heavier due to the need to reinforce the spokes or add more spokes. Flat or convex wheels need less of this. However the difference in weight I've seen tends to be .5 - 1.5 lbs for similar styles. Unsprung this isn't great, but it's not a deal killer either (thankfully).

They main reason I chose Titan wheels over RPF1s was the way they appeared larger than 17".

If you're willing to spend a bit more, something multi-piece with a stepped lip.

My old Meister S1 16" had a stepped lip that made it look like a 17" wheel with low profile tires.
