WTB: Used car for 16 year old

I couldn't tell if I should have posted this in the Cars for Sale forum or here.
I'm a lurker on this forum and I hardly ever post, but let's jump straight to the point.
I am 16 years old and I am graduating a year early from HS, and I will need a car for college. My dad does not want to get me anything too old as he thinks there's too much of a cost in repairing/maintaining the car. We both agree that it should be a hatch or a sedan at least.
Anything older than 8-10 years is out of the question for him (I really wanted a EG/EK ).
Car should be an automatic as my dad thinks manuals are obsolete, but I wish to learn manual, especially if this is just going to be a beater car, and I believe manual is superior.
I am also about 6'4'', so that is something to factor in.
Please, no Daewoo Lanos' or Aveos.

Also, if you guys have any suggestions/recommendations for what car I should drive, do let me know!

Test drive a Ralliart if gas isn't going to be an issue for you or buy the new Carolla since it is already cheap and great on gas. Also look into Mazda speed 6, I've been hearing a lot of things about that car.

How much money have you saved to put towards this car? (budget)

There are lots of older reliable cars. First car I bought was a '89 honda accord in like '03 for $2800. Zero problems but quickly traded that in for a '93 Integra GS-R for $3700 (steal!) and that thing had zero issues either..

Honestly, bang for buck and reliability: Honda Civic. Newest you can afford. They get good gas mileage, they are reliable, parts are cheap, and in some circles they are cool

I bought my son a 2000 vw golf for $2000. It needed another $1000 in maintenance items and I made him do all the work and learn about his car.

If you get a car that needs nothing you don't learn much IMO.

To be honest, I don't have a job as I was on my school's football team, but he doesn't mind paying. Thankfully, he is going to hook me up at a place he used to work where they'll pay at least an amazing $16 an hour, so I'll be paying for my insurance if not at least contributing.
My dad is a little hard-headed so he can't understand why I want an old civic or any car made before the 2000's and refuses to buy something of that nature. I'm just trying to save him money.

Lol my parents wanted me to only get a new car so I understand. But I would definitely get a ralliart cuz this year snow taught me the advantage of a four door and awd.

I want to learn how to check/replace fluids, etc. but my dad wants to get a used car that is somewhat newer so I don't have to do all of those things. My old man is a little strange with some stuff.

Yeah! My dad thinks it's better if I drive a new car than any used one.
The snow this year was really bad (maybe more before this winter ends but I hope not), but I make money by shoveling my neighbors so I can't complain that much. I understand the advantages of awd though. Depending on where I go to college, I might not need it but I'll look into ralliarts and some old subarus.

Used Impreza or Legacy, maybe even a pre-2006 WRX if you get lucky and find one that isn't modded to hell and/or abused (insurance would be pricey though). They all can be found in manual, come in hatchback or sedan body styles, and are very reliable. Plus the aftermarket is plentiful.

Lol my dad doesnt wantme to drive a car that could possibly break down on the highway. Good luck with your choice. Ralliart was my second choice after the frs.

I'd say a 2006 DC5 5MT. You will probably average at least 30mpg and have a safe reliable coupe that's functional in snowage and very affordable. It's easy to work on and great to learn stuff with.
