AP Racing / Essex brake kits fit 16's? Yes! And even 15's!!

Now, before you say NO, or SEARCH NOOB

I asked this question a few months ago, was told no. So I stopped looking at the kits.

I have been looking at the Wilwood kit thats actually made for a WRX, mainly because it fits in a 16" (Actually it fits inside a 15", but you need offset around zero, so not a real option.)

Anyway, last week I tried the Wilwood template against my OEM 16"x6.5"

So, fits inside wheel, as expected. Fouls on spoke. Needs about a 8mm spacer, 10mm to be sure.

While I had wheel off, notice Enkei stamped on the spoke, didn't know about that!

Anyway. Next day I tried a 2005 Toyota Celica wheel. These are 16"x6.5", but +39, so offset seemed like it might fit.

And they actually ended up with room to spare....

My only concern with this WRX kit, is that I'm going to want more than it can deliver. I still like the reviews I read about the AP Racing Sprint kit, so I thought I'd just compare templates on my screen

Willwood

AP Racing Sprint

http://www.essexparts.com/media/down...eltemplate.pdf

Now, the first thing I wanted to look at was the overall clearance, as I was told the 16" would simply not fit over the kit. The wilwood template shows overall of 172.7mm, the AP Racing Sprint kit is LESS, at 169.7mm. So it will fit inside the wheel.
Comparing the caliper face to the hat face, the Sprint kit requires 8mm more clearance (basically where it fouls to the spoke)
Now this isn't in the exact same spot, so definitely estimating now, but the celica wheel had about 6-8mm clearance where the Wilwood caliper was closest to the spoke, but the Sprint kit as this critical point 17mm further from the centre line, which will only help as the spoke continues away giving more clearance at this point.

Clearly the Sprint kit won't fit the OEM 16", but at a guess, with a 20mm spacer it will. But, it might fit this celica wheel. And, many other 16" wheels.

One more thing. Looking at the last photo, you can see some clearance there. For a sense of scale, the second line on the template is 11.5mm from the edge of the template. Why am I mentioned this, well the AP Racing Endurance template only needs 11mm more at this point than the Wilwood. This maybe cutting this too close for comfort, but it is an interesting discovery. It should be noted that the Endurance kit will need basically the same clearance to the inside spoke as the Sprint, but again this point is even further along from the centre line. Endurance template seen here
http://www.essexparts.com/media/down...eltemplate.pdf

Final point, AP Racing templates state that 2.5mm clearnace should be seen around template. So this may rule the Endurance kit out. But the Sprint certainly seems feasible.

I'll do up a template today at work, and hopefully I can get home intime tonight to measure for sure, against the celica wheel.

I'll bought a set of SSR Type C 16's the other day, they should arrive next week. Because 4.9kg. Will be good to test against them as well.

Will update tomorrow hopefully.

Quick update.

The sprint kit fits the celica wheels! Heaps of room to inside of barrel, about 3mm to spoke.

Endurance kit, as suspected, would have more clearance to inside of spoke, but I reckon it would be too close to inner barrel.

Also tried sprint template against a 15x7 et0 wheel I had in my garage, it fits that as well!

Pics added.

I'll be trying the template over some other wheels as well. I have some se37k's, the type-c's and just bought some 15" watanabes as well.

More pics to come.

Yeah, but for $180 for 4 wheels and tyres, can't complain.

They're redundant now for me anyway. This week I bought a set of 16" Type C's, which will make even better track wheels.

It's great to know the Essex kit can handle small wheels. I know it can handle the stock spare tire and I dont think many other BBK can do that, regardless of the platform
