TRD Teases New GT-86 Griffon Concept For Tokyo

TRD's Griffon Concept - image: TRD

Quote:
Just last week we brought you word that Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s long-term motorsport partner, would introduce a new concept based on the GT-86 (our Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ) at the upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon.

The Gazoo Racing variant will feature a twin-charged engine (combining both turbocharging and supercharging), said to be good for some 325 horsepower, and it will sport track-inspired bodywork including an oversized rear wing.

To avoid being overshadowed by Gazoo Racing, World Car Fans says that Toyota Racing Development (TRD) is also planning a GT-86-based concept for the Tokyo Auto Salon, to be called the 86 TRD Griffon. TRD released the deliberately-fuzzy image shown here, so we'll need to wait for Tokyo to get a better idea of the car's lines.

While details on the car’s power output are lacking, details on its performance have been leaked by TRD. The Griffon managed to lap Japan’s Tsukuba Circuit in 1:01.872, which makes it nearly 0.4 seconds faster per lap than a Ferrari 458 Italia.

According to TRD, the Griffon features a lighter and stiffer body, a “track-oriented” suspension and a free-flowing exhaust system. We’d bet that there’s some forced induction in the mix, too, although TRD isn’t releasing further details until the Tokyo show.

The Toyota / Scion / Subaru models were always meant to be a blank canvas for owners to customize based on styling and performance preferences. We’re glad to see TRD working alongside tuners to push the performance envelope for these remarkably-capable-yet-still-affordable cars.

Ugggh. It wouldn't be so bad of a repost but the first post came from Hachi a week ago when it was new "news" and he has it on the cover page currently. The last repost was only hours ago.

Yes I am aware that there is a thread with 5 86 concepts. But if I recall corretly in the past myself and other members did the same thing / update the current thread. But than the mods/admins ended up moving/deleting posts to new/separate threads anyways.

Toyota GT86 Griffon Concept is Faster Than a Ferrari

Quote:
As the Tokyo Auto Salon approaches, Toyota Racing Development (TRD) is teasing what it’s calling the GT86 Griffon Concept, a car which it claims lapped the Tsukuba circuit in 1 minute and 1.872 seconds, beating the time set by a Ferrari 458 Italia.

Official details regarding all of the modifications will be released on January 11, but until then TRD dropped some hints as to what has been done to the GT86 Griffon Concept, along with releasing the blurry photo seen above.

Lowered and tweaked suspension, upgraded exhaust, lightweight materials, and a stiffened body have all been used to aid the Griffon Concept on the track. No engine modifications details have been released, but TRD says that it has been testing some parts related to the FA-20 engine.

To put up those track times, it seems likely that more than just body and suspension modification were used on the car, though we won’t know until it is officially unveiled next week.

I checked the headlines too he mentioned TRD Griffon Concept but no pics except for that engine. Faster than a 458 @ Tsukuba! I can't wait to see this thing!

I think its better to have a separate thread for each concept. Otherwise its just one big messy thread that can be a bit confusing for some.

I think you guys wont get it due to your very strict emissions law. But europe and asia will most likely get this model.

It's a concept model, if it went into production the run would be very limited and you would be looking at upwards of $70,000.
