What I just don't understand...
Hello guys. My first time here. Hello yes hello
![]() I'll be getting a FR-S this coming friday (trading in my bmw z4 3.0i) What i just don't understand is why toyota decided sell a skimped version of GT86 with sh*t interior under scion... While subaru gets the decent interior with a front bumper "mustache". What's the deal? Did they care to explain?

Its pure marketing. Frs is not Toyota's bread and butter, they simply needs a car to revive the scion brand. And since scion is a entry level brand marketed toward younger individual with less disposable income. Price has to be kept low. $25000 is often known as the magic number for new car. Because manufacturers know buyers will be most comfortable with a $4-500 monthly payment on a typical 20% down payment in a 4 years loan.
On the other hand, Subaru goes up market to avoid directly competing with Scion, while still cheaper than the Wrx and Sti. So, ideally it won't steal sales from the two establsihed models. |

Who cares? Once you starting driving the FR-S you'll forget about how interior looks with that huge smile on your face!

Just get the damn BRZ Limited and later on change the bumper to a FRS bumper and it will look sick. There is a pic of it on this site.

yeah once you drive the car you'll forget it's a scion until you see all the scion badges. other than that it is all marketing and business strategy. It's really difficult to see a 200hp car for more than 25k in the united states. So even if they did release the higher-end model here, it would shrink their market.

I guess toyota really fucked up with Scion then. All I ever see/read/hear is people whining about it being a scion

Hmmm...at one point I regretted not ordering the BRZ upscale model (sport tech in Canada). However, since I have 2 brand new vehicles (2012 xB for winter) and that's still about $55K cash I have shelled out, perhaps it has to stop somewhere.
Also, I actually had no idea there was a Subaru equivalent initially and was just excited to go back to Scion, which is still a pretty novel brand in Canada in it's second year of operation here. I am 48, but sdtill appreciate the youthfulness of the brand. When I was in my 20's I'd have been all over them. The nice thing about Scion's lower entry fee is that they still keep the car true to it's sports car design, not deleting anything that adversely affects performance. Also, if you want a really unique car you can always spend the difference on performance upgrades vs. leather/alcantra, radio, etc etc. And then there is 5 Axis, made for the Scions! I do like the completeness of the upgraded Subaru, but I'm not one for facial hair on my vehicle Not to crazy about the gaping Mazda-like smile on the BRZ either. Too much Lightening McQueen for me. Although the Subaru has better headlights, I think the Scion has a much more attractive/aggressive looking face, so to speak. Some things, like HID's can be added later anyway. I had them in my TSX 8 years ago and they are worthwhile! It's your call. The extras are nice, ust remember you will be waking up to that face on a daily basis!

Am I the only one who prefers the FR-S interior to the BRZ? I hate leather, I prefer the HVAC controls, the plain radio and overall appearance.

I've never been carving a mountain road and thought to myself "Gee, I wish I had some toggle switches with my hvac controls."
Lets be honest, the interiors of both cars are pretty bare. The subaru's is 'improved' by the switches and silly shaped knobs but is also kind of messed up by the big silver panel (in fairness, nobody's going to buy an FR-S just to get the fake cf tratment). In short, if interior refinement is near the top of your shopping list you probably shouldn't be looking at either of these cars. -Justin

One reason I'm glad it's a Scion is that being monospec with limited dealer add-ons has helped keep the price down. If there were a ton of options dealers would be ordering the cars loaded up and you wouldn't be able to find an FR-S for less that $35,000. Look at all the posts from people who have had to buy aftermarket wheels, leather, paint treatments, etc. All added by the dealer just to get their profit up (not to mention ridiculous "market adjustments"). |
