See attached picture. What is the best way to repair this outer layer which is chipping away?

Any idea what caused this? I have a pair on the way and would like to avoid this. Should I clear coat them or something? Ceramic coat?

Depends on a few things but generally speak to prevent failure of clear coat on carbon fiber - either take it to a shop to layer on an extra 1-2 clear coat layers, epoxy it, ceramic coat or all options.

On top of one of those, monthly waxing (even spray wax) helps, especially in warmer environments (CA or AZ)
