Top mount intercooler?

Would a wrx or sti intercooler be viable? Would it even fit under a hood like this:

Not really. The throttle body on the WRX and STi faces to the rear, so the intercooler can dump straight into it. You'd have to do some inspired pipe work to route the airflow around to the front.

Don't a lot of WRXs relocate their intercoolers to the front for better cooling? Why put it on top?

They change it to a FMIC because a TMIC will heat soak after a while and it's limited on volume.

Sorry for reviving such an old thread, but I am on a quest to figure out a TMIC turbo setup for the BRZ/FRS/86. There's a lot of moving parts that need to come together... but I think I have a setup that might just work:

So... IBR makes a kit for the 2015+ WRX, inwhich they have some spacers/adaptors to run a BRZ intake manifold (our manifolds offer better flow, and they can utilize the front-facing throttle body for simpler FMIC pipe routing).

I want to do the opposite. I want to either utilize a WRX manifold (not sure how i'll get back the port injection), or make an adaptor that'll simply flip our manifold around, while possibly utilize the WRX mounting brackets + TMIC.

Meanwhile, we can utilize either the Works Stage 1 Turbo-kit or the PTuning Turbo-Kit (minus their piping) to get the rear mounted turbo setup that would offer an efficient route to the intercooler.

The only other issue is a hood, but I think that's the least of our worries at this point.

Would a traditional OEM Fit TMIC even fit in these bays? They can be tight fitting in the wrx/sti and our engine sits was further back.
