Help for a header noob
I have a '16 BRZ, Perrin catback. Otherwise stock.
I want to do a tune at some point (either delicious or OFT). But I also have a header on my shopping list. I live in CT, and so I have to do emissions occasionally. I don't want to do anything that will cause the car to not be compliant. Does that mean I need a catted header, or just a header with O2 sensor ports? I also don't want a CEL until I get a tune. Finally - I like the idea of the delicious tune and then playing with the pops and bangs map. But if I get a catted header will that just destroy the cat? Thanks! |

1. get the tune with the header, not after. There's no reliable way to get rid of the CEL without a tune.
2. Even with a catted header you can throw a CEL 3. With the tune disabling the O2 sensor codes to suppress the CEL, you will get an emissions readiness error. Depending on your state you might be allowed 1 readiness error and still pass. 4. Pops/bangs and other artifacts of introducing fuel rich conditions will harm your cats, including the secondary one in the frontpipe. |

Thanks for the reply.
So even with a catted header like this: http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/ft-8...l#.W2rt_VVKiUk I would still be at risk for CELs/emissions? |

Help for a header noob
Yep, the aftermarket cats just don't work as well. They sacrifice efficiency for airflow.
O2 sensor spacers can get rid of the CEL, but it's not a reliable method, and they can do funny things to your fuel trims. Your best bet is a catless header with a proper tune. Catless + OFT should come out loud less than a catted header by itself anyway. If you want to go cheap, look into the Gruppe-S header. It's essentially a Tomei clone, so good gains. It is easily the best bang for buck for a header. |

No header is emissions compliant except for the one that comes with the car. |

So it looks like OP is out of luck since he doesn't want the car to be out of compliance.

Yep. In some states one could pass inspection without being in compliance, but that's not advisable. If you want the car emissions compliant, you have to run the stock header and frontpipe. |

Its not hard to swap headers on this car. When you need to get smog done put old tune and headers back on. When done put aftermarket ones back on and OFT tune.
IMO JDL UEL/Tomie UEL header with OFT. |

I would leave it stock if you don't want to tune it.

It totally depends on how horrible the emissions testing is. You'll need to ask local people to know that.
Note that it is a federal crime to remove emissions devices, like cats. The actual crime and penalty are only for removal, not for driving a car without them, so there is no real enforcement. Some states you can pass everything without cats, some states have visual checks that make it impossible to pass if everything is not stock. Some states are in between, and depend on where you live in the state. |
