How much will it cost to turbo my car?

Hello,

I am looking into buy a speed by design turbo kit, the SBD500X with the pre welded oil pan. My engine is stock.

https://spdbydesign.com/product/sbd5...-brzscion-frs/

What else do I need to have the car fully operational, no problem, turbo, and making around +100hp?

If you want just 100 hp then you're okay with the 400X. The kit is plug and play. All the requirements are outlined when you purchase it. You need either an ecutek or OFT tune and there are certain recommended parts like crash bar and stage 2 clutch, but that's pretty much it.

For +100hp (so 300hp at the Engine) you basicly need "just" a turbo kit. Supporting mods like an oil cooler are recomended.

+ an ECU reflash, ECUtek or OFT tune for your application.

So I don't need to wrap the headers? I'm fine with just the turbo kit and a ecutek?

Are you able to do the work yourself? Are you proficient enough to be able to repair things if/when they go wrong? Can you have the car down for long periods? Why such a specific HP number goal?

Based upon you questions I am not sure that you understand the implications of turboing a car to 100hp above the engineered rating. Contrary to what has been said here kits are not actually "plug and play" and require some knowledge to install and maintain.

So far I have some budget numbers, I am around 12k for a full blown FI setup, this exceeds your request for +100 hp, but gives you an idea to run a FI setup that is LESS troublesome. (IMO)

*FI Package (Turbo or Supercharger)
*Oil Cooler
*FA20 internals
*Radiator upgrade
*Clutch + fork
*Flywheel
*Injectors
*Fuel pump
*All fluids replaced and or upgraded* This is a reoccurring cost
*Ecutek
*Custom Tune + E85
*E85 flexfuel
*Replacement brake system *Pads/Rotors are a reoccurring cost
*Upgraded tires/rims to support the power *tires are a reoccurring cost
*Monitoring - Basic will be done with a Nexus 7 + Torque app, detailed monitoring will be done via ECUTek

Low boost I was looking around 350-400, high boost around 600+ (This is at the ground not at the crank)

IF I plan on staying within high boost, I would look to upgrade the following:

*Axels
*Drive shaft

Mind you I have been piecing this together and prioritized safety before speed, and understanding when monitoring what to look.

I have personally made enough mistakes to buy another car (different platform) so this time around, its planned, researched and costs are factored in a 10-year plan. I keep my cars 10 years at minimum, so maintenance, and understanding has to be calculated and understood.

Im about 14k here and thats not including the engine.

Dont forget engine, trans and diff mounts or the car will hate you. I also recommend an exhaust.

I dont think the factory drive shaft breaks but the axles sure as hell do with enough rubber.

I'm at about +100 whp with the Edelbrock Supercharger.

Technically this is the "cheaper" option as in the short run Superchargers require less maintenance from the get go and as a DD dont require as much. They also tend to be a bit more "bolt on".

But as a few of the other members here have said. It's not as simple as slapping on a kit, getting a tune and you are good to go. You have to think long term.

What kind of stress is it putting on my engine?
Or Clutch?
Transmission?
How do i drive the car already? Hard? Soft and slow?
Will i regret not buying something that could potentially be more powerful?

For me i spent 6000$ on my kit. That is including install, supporting mods and custom tune.

You have to remember there are costs outside of just the kit itself.

If you choose a reputable kit, install it carefully, understand all of the pieces and how each functions, and spend a good amount of time reading the forums and recommendations from the manufacturer you should be OK. Your best bet is to buy a used kit in my opinion. I've seen SBD kits go for anywhere from 1.5k to 3.5k used. At ~100 increased wheel horsepower you may need an oil cooler, and potentially clutch. If you don't increase boost more than that you should be OK without additional supporting mods (although things like catch cans or a built engine will always increase engine longevity at any increased power level).

You don't need engine/diff/trans mounts or axles or drive-shafts at the power level you are looking at. You don't need a whole slew of track-ready upgrades (unless you are planning on doing more than daily driving). ~100 extra horsepower isn't going to beat this car up (although there is always risk of failure, even when stock). The problems occur when you get tired of the extra 100 horsepower and want to push the limits more. Then you need to consider Chronology's list of extras.

If you do it right, and are willing to wait for a deal, you can go FI with either a turbo or SC for under 3-4k. Personally, I'm happily boosted at ~100-125 extra wheel horsepower with a total investment of 3k. I was able to do this by selling my OFT (to offset the cost of the ecutek license), borrowing an ecutek cable, buying a used SC kit, installing myself, and making smart choices on aftermarket parts. You don't need to pour tons of money into this car if you try to work from the used market.

The only things I would add:
1. Make SURE you choose a reputable tuner. The tune is the MOST important part of a boosted setup. If the tune is no good, it doesn't matter what other supporting mods you have in place. A good tune can limit risk to the engine and make your experience much better.
2. If you go with a turbo setup, be prepared to add gauges/hard-ware fail-safes. Don't rely solely on software. It takes just a few seconds of overboost to ruin a good time.
