Cam Shaft Control
I would like to understand how the cams are controlled (advance/retard). The diagram below shows an actuator (13) and a control valve (12) which the motor's wiring harness plugs into. The actuator seems to attach directly to the cam shaft. The control valve seems to mount to the timing chain cover and sits right on top of the actuator (13). Does (12) control (13)?
My 2015 engine just got rebuilt with 2013 parts and the cams are stuck at 0 deg. Cam control is non existent no matter the tune we try. We have replaced the ECU with an appropriate-for-my-VIN 2015 ecu which did not solve the issue. What would be the next thing to replace? Control valve (12)? I have heard people talking about cam sensors? Are these just control valves (12)? Thanks!

AFAIK all the ecu are same auto manual all countries same we jave used a manaul usa ecu in auto australian car ok just flashed it with correct rom calibration.
yes their are some cam position sensors as well have a look in the TSB section in the forums theirs a few tsb on cams sensors and they jave some good diagnostics to run. basic operation is the oil control valves control oil pressure to the cam sproket accutauators that control the cam position. their is a feedback loop in that the ecu will command a certian cam position and it expacts to see the cam position sensor report the correct position. I suspect if it doesnt get correct feedback it will disable cams. Thier is also some type of calibration\test the ecu does after a flash or reset and cams are locked at zero till this test passes, it takes arround minute of normal idle to complete with no accelerator input. if you have increased idle significantly this test may not complete Last edited by steve99; 03-02-2017 at 03:48 AM. |

I remember AVO had some issues with this back in the day and posted a few times about it. I don't remember what the solution was, but they tried a lot of different approaches. If you don't find what you're looking for it might be worth it to contact them.
That said, many tuners have said that you need to leave everything alone and let the car idle for a couple of minutes after initial startup after installing a tune, otherwise the cams will be locked at zero. I'm guessing you're well aware of that issue, but I thought it couldn't hurt to say it even if it is redundant. |
