Ecotec or Open Source

Hi all, searched but didn't see this discussed. So I made a few performance mods to my FRS (just intake and header) and am getting it retuned next week at Works, Sonoma Raceway. I have to decide if I want an Ecutek or "Open Source" tune. I have heard of Ecutek but to be honest I'm not exactly sure what Open Source is. Is this a brand or are they creating their own custom tune?

Anyway, there is a significant price difference between the two because of the Ecutek licensing (about $300) but I don't mind paying more if it is the better option. Car is naturally aspirated and probably will stay that while (at least for the next couple of years).

If you were in my situation what would you do and anybody have experience with Open Source or Works?

Thanks,
Eman

ok have a read here
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106068

and then here

On a naturally aspirated car their is no power advantage in ecutek tune vs open source.

your ecutek tune will be locked and so will ecu

opensource tune ecu is unlocked and you could read/alter tune and so could any other tuner.

If you dont want/need the ecutek fancy features like map switching which you could use to switch between petrol and E85 and auto blip on downshift then the opensource will be fine.

if i was paying extra for ecutek id want a 4 map multi fuel tune like the moto-east guys do 91/93/E50/E85

OK thank you for the info. 91 is all that is available around here (unless I buy race gas at the track) E85 is only carried by a couple stations that are both about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes away so I don't need a flex fuel tune or anything like that. Just one tune to go along with my intake and header to get rid of the torque dip. So, sounds like the open source is what I need.

Thanks,
Eman

OFT - $400 used or $500 new. Logging capabilities. Not perfectly tailored to your car out of the box, but usually pretty good. Definitely want to monitor the results to make sure they're working. Easy to resell the tablet if you sell the car.

ECUTek - $600. Perfectly calibrated to your exact car and dialed in by an expert. No resale value.

I would hit up Neal @TheRacersLine in Concord. He has a strong relationship with creator of the OpenFlash Tablet, and is also a great place to get a Delicious ECUTek tune. He is an expert in the 86 platform, and his shop is a fun place to hang out. https://www.facebook.com/TheRacersLine/

I know what the OFT is, that wasn't it. It was definitely an Open Source tune not an open flash tablet. If I was going to use the OFT I would just install it myself. I was hoping to get something a little more tailored to my car.

I have heard good things about the Racers Line but Works is right in my back yard (I live in Sonoma) and I like to give my business locally when possible.

So what's this ecotec business then, since you're adamant you know what you're talking about?

Clearly I don't know what I'm talking about as it pertains to ECU tuning, which is why I asked the question. I'm sorry I didn't know how to spell Ecutek, it has been pointed out.

What I said was that I knew what an OFT (Open Flash Tablet) was and that what the shop was referring to was not that.
