oil change question
I have about 1600 miles on my car and thinking of getting an oil change before the complimentary 5000 from scion.
Being my first new car I bought and a completely new car in the market, I'm a little nervous about bringing it in to a regular mechanic instead of the dealership. Anybody think this is a bad idea? |

Just make sure they use a good filter and good synthetic 0w-20.

no
buy your own oil and buy your own filter. (filter you can get at dealership) go to one of those places where they don't jack your car but instead have a bunker underneath, (here we have Midas and Mr.Lube), that way there is zero chance of someone incorrectly lifting your car or damaging your doors when they swing them open, etc, etc etc. you watch them drain it, you watch them tighten it, you watch them fill the oil that you brought and opened with your own hands. have them type the model/brand of the oil into the receipt print out. keep for records. I recomend Amsoil 0w-20 (their top line) for normal use, 0w-30 if you're gonna autocross.

My only advise, make sure said mechanic DOES NOT use Fram.
Purolator, Wix (Napa and Carquest are Wix) or OEM is preferred.

Do it yourself and get a Fumoto valve. This car is going to have the easiest oil changes ever.

Drain plug was way overtorqued - I almost wore out the nut before bringing it into a local mechanic and luckily they were able to get it off. I ordered a Fumoto valve from amazon and I'll have that installed on my next oil change when I get the complimentary one from Scion.
Installed a K&N 1004 filter for about 13 bucks. Anybody know why the Toyota filter is 25 bucks? |
