FA20 engine block plate

Anyone know what the purpose is of the engine block off plate? I'm assuming there is coolant circulating through the passages behind it. I bought a used block and it didn't have one.

Part # 11032AA030, it's like $5.

There is some baffling behind the plate. This is ultimately connected to the front breather line. What's kind of interesting is the open hole on the top, looks like it just open to the inside of the timing belt cover.

Has anyone determined the purpose of this plate and what happens if it is removed? I ask because I got an engine back from a builder and we found this plate missing.

No coolant, just baffling for the front crankcase vent. That plate closes the chamber off so the baffling works. Reason they put a plate there is they can't cast that baffled void into the block with a closed end.

Think of that chamber as an internal "catch can" or blow-by separator. It's not very effective, as many people have seen plenty of oil in the intake tract, particularly with FI. Leaving it open just makes it even less effective. Doesn't hurt anything.
