Nikon D3300

Hey guys, so yesterday I went out and bought a Nikon D3300. I've always wanted to get in to photography since I was young, but never had the money or free time to do it. Now I do, so I thought I'd try to jump right into it. Well, I got home and took it out of the box, charged it up, and turned it on, and I have NEVER been so confused in my life.

Any tips for a beginner? I know I can probably figure it all out by reading the owners manual, but I'm at work right now and don't have it with me, and I want to mess around with it after I get off. I really know nothing about photography, and would appreciate all the help I can get.

Thanks in advance guys

Well, if you can post here from work I'm assuming you can Google search. Every user manual exists online now a days basically so go read it. And there are as many car forums as photography forums/info out there. Learn what shutter speed, appature, etc do to photos. Take a crap ton of pics and see it for yourself (theory vs. reality). Everything you could possibly want to read about it is already out there

I bought a new SLR type camera summer of 2014...certainly not my first one, yet a new to me brand.

I work constantly back and forth between the manual and actually using the camera, touching it's buttons, slowly learning it's menu.

I was totally swearing at the camera for days, took about 30 days for me to calm down, having finally gotten used to the basics of setting the camera to work my way.

When it pisses you off, set it down and do something else for a while...same thing I do when pissed at my compute machine.

Patience is a virtue....sans that, enjoy the swearing, later being happy you made the effort.

The most common adjustment you'll need to check and change, on any camera is exposure compensation.

This guy, from LaJolla, Ca. knows his shit:

Learn how shutter speed and aperture affect the image. When I got my first DSLR, a Nikon D40, years ago, I put it in full manual mode and experimented on how different adjustments affects the image. Just have fun with it, and you'll learn from experience. After you get used to the camera, and how ISO, f-stop, shutter speed, focal length, and object distance from you and background affect the image, pick a mode you're comfortable with and shoot with it.

For me, that was aperture priority since I don't photograph fast moving objects or do action shots.

Here are some pics I took in the past to possibly get you excited and go out and shoot:

Detailed User manual from Nikon here:

http://download.nikonimglib.com/arch...0_NT(En)02.pdf

Also >firmware updates< available. Best always to check and see if there's an update newer than when your camera body was made. Updates can be done online with camera plugged into USB port, on most cameras.

Watch the Jarod Polin videos above and Tony Northrup's video on aperture ISO and shutter speed. Just type in "understanding aperture ISO and shutter speed" and it should be the first to pop up.
