Break in -interstate
Hello, new here essentially. I will be receiving my car soon and have to drive 400 miles from Florida to South Carolina. I know it's not ideal but I have to, Is there any risk toward the engine for driving 400 miles straight?

Keep varying your engine speed, you'll be fine.

I drove it "normal" and even kept it at set cruise control speeds for hours at a time, from 25 miles to 900 miles CO > CA.
Nothing bad came out of it. -alex |

You should be fine as long as you vary like everyone else said. Also, from one of my tuners, let it go from 4,000 and cost down to around 1,000 down shift and repeat.
Also my breakin is 90% of the time soft (4,000 and under) every one hundred miles hit 7,000 peak hp 1 so every 100 miles... Oil changed first 1,000 CE |

If you drove your engine very hard right after break in then no ill effects are likely. The single most important part of engine break in is to thrash the bejeezus out of it right after the initial ring seating is completed. Thrash it too early and you'll be sorry, or more likely the next owner will be. Anyone who thinks engines in mass produced cars are broken in by the factory needs to change his smoking materials. Rolls Royce or Ferrari yes, Subaru or Toyota? You must be delusional. |

You need to load and unload the rings periodically. You need to avoid overloading the rings (high combustion pressure develops very high ring loads ). You need to avoid overheating the rings (high combustion pressures or high rpm or both tend to overhear the rings). You need to extend the rpm range after initial break in to prevent the development of no wear ridges too low in the bores. A bad case of lazy break in can lead to broken top compression rings if a no wear ridge develops too low in the bore. Changing the oil at 1,000 miles is no longer necessary and might delay full break in. Believe it or not but any extra metal powder that passes the oil filter might help the seating of the rings. It certainly doesn't hurt. However, changing the oil early is unlikely to adversely affect an otherwise correct break in. |
