Need a hammer for knocking loose ball joints
What kind of hammer am I looking for?
I had previously been using a ball joint removal tool and it works well but last time it slipped and stripped the thread on the ball joint stud and caused me a huge headache. Thinking I should try the hammer for now, at least until I get over it. So what kind of hammer do I need? A dead blow hammer? What weight is good?

A dead blow or ball peen. The biggest that will fit and still be able to get some ooompf on it will do the task just fine.

Don't look for a hammer, look for a steel mallet. Dead blows/ball peen take too much effort.
Two taps and ball joints fall out. One swing if good. Something like this. http://www.perennial.co.nz/abode/686...etalmallet.jpg They are like $10 about 5-10lbs that's all you need.

Yep that would do. But you could find it cheaper with a basic wooden handle. Unless you'll be hammering all day get that one.

I use both a mini sledge (no idea on the weight) and a dead blow (whatever is closest). Leave the nut on the ball join loosely so you don't hammer the threads

Just buy a press, less energy and more efficient. It's cheaper in the long run.

And you don't have to place the nut on the ball joint. Unless your going to reuse it.
