Everyday Driver "Greatest Hits" - Eco Mustang v. WRX v. FR-S v. FiST

I like how the two reviewers have such different takes on these cars, especially the FR-S and Mustang. They both present their views and preferences well. Different strokes for different folks as they say.

Todd's opinion is the only opinion I ever care about as he is more into raw/light feeling type sports cars. Paul is more of the opposite.

Check out this article by Todd.

Listening to this while at work. I'm kind of surprised that they could spec the Ecoboost Mustang out to $38,000, but feel as though I shouldn't be.

I really liked the way the rankings turned out at the end of this video.

I Love their reviews. I almost always agree with Todd's insight. I would rank the cars the exact same way.

I love the wrx but that line about the wrx being a corolla with a hood scoop

Review is Enthusiast Cars from $25-$30k... then immediately....

They're provided with a spec'd up the Mustang with probably every option available at $38k+ and then proceed to talk about it like it's in the same price category as the other cars. Specifically they spend the first 10 minutes of the video raving about how much better the interior is than the rest of the field (especially the Recaro seats). Duh? You have to watch through all this mess till the 30 minute mark to get them to mention the price differential being a problem (at least Todd does). Jeez.

Also, listening to Paul (the admitted "Ford" guy) laud the Fords in the test and try his hardest to minimize all of their shortcomings was annoying to say the least. I would skip up to the 30 minute mark for them to get to the point. The driving impressions before that were kinda crap.

In the end

FR-S
Todd - 1st Place - Feels most connected to the car
Paul - 4th Place - Wants a cushier car, sees this as a track toy.

WRX
Todd - 2nd Place - Likes the overall competence
Paul - 3rd Place - See's the value, but cryptically "wants a little more". Says he likes both Fords best. Hmm...

Fiesta ST
Todd - 3rd Place - Despite the cheapness, likes the consistent fun feeling
Paul - 2nd Place - Chooses this above the FR-S because it has "something more"

Mustang Ecoboost
Todd - 4th Place "...this car feels significantly larger, so you kind of have to ask yourself, what kind of car do I like. Because this... There's no way around it, this is a big car. "
Paul - 1st Place - "When we're done filming, what is the car you can finishing driving out of the canyon, but you want to be in on the freeway. It's not the FR-S, I could see myself in the Fiesta, and the WRX is ok but I want to be in this car. I want to be in the Mustang."

Somebody get Paul a Lincoln.

Paul is smart. That "something more" is the female acceptance factor. He knows the ladies would prefer to ride in a Mustang than the FR-S, more often than not.

I was playing around on Ford's website, and you really do have to check every single package and option (not including things like cargo nets) to get the Ecoboost Premium up to the price they had.

Other things I learned while playing with car configurators today:

The 2016 WRX STI Limited now has navigation standard, but the price has also been raised by the $1500 that the navigation option used to be.

A Mustang GT Premium with the "click all the things!" treatment is a bit over $45,000; however, configuring a regular GT with more reasonable options (track pack, Recaros) is only $37,610. A tiny bit less than the Ecoboost reviewed here.

Canadians pay a lot of sales tax on new car purchases.

just yesterday, a "female" mustang driver was blocking my car's way out the parking just to tell me how much she liked it... AND that she was looking to change the Stang for one...

"female" loves sexy, and our cars are just sexier than a Stang.

The sad part is we pay taxes on the taxes. They include all sorts of required "fees" (i.e electronics and tire disposal) on the price and then charge us taxes on the total number.

I actually like the new mustang a lot, but really do not understand the reason for the eco boost version. Why did they feel they needed the mustang to have 3 tiers instead of 2. If you are going for the mustang I think you have to get the GT, basically going for most power for the buck type mentality.

FRS = Handling/fun above all.
Mustang = Power/performance above all.
WRX = Jack of all trades lean towards power/performance.
Fiesta = Jack of all trades lean towards handling/fun.

Don't know about where you live but here I bet 90% of the Mustangs are driven by women (not a joke nor exaggeration). They just want a "cool" car and could not give a rat's ass about power.

I'm fairly certain the v6 is only around for fleet sales, and maybe a few people who can't afford a GT but are weary of forced induction. Outside of North America (at least in Europe) the only options are the Ecoboost and GT. I wouldn't be too surprised if you see the v6 getting phased out eventually, or made fleet only like the Caprice PPV. Just less police car and more the "sporty" midsize option at Enterprise.
