Worth the trip to a dealer? Flywheel? Gearbox?

Hey guys,

Been having this issue for a while now. Done research on here and found similar issues, but none that quite match up in terms as when it happens with the clutch in, rolling in neutral etc.
suspecting it's flywheel chatter but not entirely sure.

While in gear, and slowing down around 2k rpm I hear a metallic rattling/grinding coming from underneath/towards the front of the car as the tach goes through that rpm range. Does it in every gear, less noticeable as I get higher in gears. ONLY when warm. Lately this sound has got very noticeable and is pretty embarrassing. Clutch in, goes away.

Clutch engangment feels fine, car has 50k km.
if it is flywheel is that considered a wear item and thus won't be under warranty?
Anyone have this exact issue?

Thanks guys sorry for the long read

Do you have a M/T?

I think I know what sound you're referring to, but I describe it more as chatter - engine starting to bog, but that's normal if you're in too high of a gear for the given rpm.

Yes it's a manual, and I get the tractor sound too when accelerating from around 2k. But this is under coasting/ engine breaking conditions no gas.

When I first got the car with 70km on it, it was very very faint and and the dealer thought it was nothing. Got a lot louder lately.

Thanks

I'd suggest you take it back to the dealer and ask them to check it out. While you are waiting, ask to drive another M/T to see if you "hear" the same sound.

If it's under warranty and it is a defective clutch/flywheel, it should be covered.

normal. we all have that sound. i was like WTF as well.
It only happens during lower acceleration or let go of gas pedal and slowly down to stop while in gear.

I have the same sound as you. I went to the dealer a few months ago and they kept the car for a few days and said everything was normal. It doesn't sound normal to me but at least the sound is documented for the future. I've been driving with that sound for thousands of miles already. It's really loud actually.

Also, the only reason it goes away when you press the clutch in is because the revs go down too quickly to hear it well, but it still happens whether you press in the clutch or not.

I made a thread about this noise almost 3 years ago. I'd say it's normal, but since you say yours is getting a lot louder, I think that's abnormal. If it's getting a lot louder, then I would take it to the dealer for them to check it out. And make sure to mention that the noise is a lot louder than it used to be.
